SELINSGROVE, PA (November 19, 2022) -- No. 4 Christopher Newport University outscored the Susquehanna University men's basketball team by 26 in the second half, overcoming a two-point deficit to earn the title in the National Beef Susquehanna Tip-Off Tournament championship game with a score of 81-57.
The River Hawks (2-2) were right with the undefeated Captains through the first 20 minutes, leading by as many as six points at 26-20 after a jumper from
Quincy Haughton with 7:02 to go in the first half. CNU would tie the game on multiple instances, but Susquehanna never trailed in the first half as it took a 37-35 edge into the halftime.
In the second half, the Captains would start to work the ball inside and controlled the game defensively. CNU (4-0) outscored the River Hawks 11-0 in the second half in points off turnovers, while holding a 28-4 edge in points in the paint in the second stanza. Susquehanna would connect on just four field goals in the second half, while CNU shot nearly 60 percent in the stanza to pull away for the victory.
Haughton tied a career-high on the afternoon, as his 22 points equaled his 22 points from Friday night's win over Lebanon Valley College. Haughton was 8-of-16 from the floor, making 2-of-3 from three-point land while playing a career-high 35 minutes.
Howie Rankine, Jr. tallied 11 points and three strals, while first-year Billy Anderson and sophomore
Ethan Stoute each tallied six points. Sophomore
Alon Barksdale got into his first collegiate game for the River Hawks, hitting both of his shot attempts for five points.
Trey Barber led the Captains with 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench, with Jahn Hines tallying 15 points, five assists, four boards and two steals in the win. Matthew Brodie and Ian Anderson each posted 10 points as well for the Captains, who shot 50 percent (30-60) for the game. CNU held a 39-24 edge on the glass, while forcing SU into 18 turnovers for the contest.
Haughton and Rankine, Jr. earned All-Tournament Team, while CNU's Brodie and Hines were tabbed to the squad while Hines was the Tournament MVP. Lebanon Valley's Peyton Lewis and Washington & Lee University's Jack d'Entremont also were honored with All-Tournamen Team accolades.
Susquehanna will take on Lycoming College Tuesday night in Williamsport, PA at 7 p.m. in the final non-conference battle between the two schools before the Warriors join the Landmark Conference in 2023-24.
