SAN JUAN, PR (December 20, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University women's basketball team, forced to play its second game in less than 18 hours, were bested by The College of New Jersey 56-38 in action from Roberto Clemente Coliseum in the second and final game of action from the Puerto Rico Clasico in San Juan.
The River Hawks (4-7) fell behind early Tuesday morning, as the Lions (7-3) took a 13-2 lead with four minutes to go in the first quarter on a three-pointer by Julia Setaro. Senior
Kaitlyn Lynch answered with a triple for the River Hawks but another Setaro three made the score 16-5 in favor of TCNJ heading to the second quarter. The second frame was back and forth, but the River Hawks wouldn't be able to cut its deficit into single digits as the Lions took a 29-17 lead into the halftime intermission.
After the intermission, Susquehanna cut the TCNJ lead down to eight points with 8:16 to go in the period on a pair of free throws by Lynch to make the score 31-23. The two teams would exchange small runs throughout the period, as the Lions took a 39-29 lead into the final period. Susquehanna would get outscored 17-9 over the final period as the Lions pulled away for the victory.
Lynch led the way offensively for the River Hawks, as she poured in 14 points while adding three steals and four boards. Sophomore
Kenzie Selvaggi also connected on 4-of-6 from the field for nine points, while senior
Isabella Schwabe tallied seven points, seven rebounds and a block. First-year
Julia Roth also posted four points, while senior
Olivia Brandt came off the bench to pull in a team-high seven rebounds, blocking two shots and scoring four points.
Susquehanna was 15-of-49 (30.6 percent) from the field for the contest, making 3-of-8 from behind the three-point line (37.5 percent). The River Hawks turned the ball over only 10 times, a season-low for the squad and the lowest turnover amount for SU since January 23, 2019 against Moravian, a stretch of 67 games.
Setaro and Sydney Blum each had 14 points in the win for the Lions, while Izzy Leazier posted four points, five rebounds and six assists in the win. TCNJ was hot from behind the arc with 10 made three-pointers on 40 percent shooting (10-25).
The River Hawks will have 11 days off before getting back on the floor in the New Year, battling York College of Pennsylvania January 2 at 6 p.m. in York, PA in the final non-conference contest of the season.
