SELINSGROVE, PA (December 7, 2022) – Taking the floor at home again after a weekend defeat against Elizabethtown, the Susquehanna women's basketball team welcomed non-conference foe Dickinson College to campus on Wednesday night. In a low-scoring battle between two tough defenses, the visitors would ultimately come out on top, 46-31.
Emblematic of how the entire game would go, it took nearly five minutes for either team to put points on the board, with a combined 14 missed shots between the two teams before the first make. Julia Pinckert would have both of her made shots in the quarter, hitting two three-pointers which Dickinson would match, before a made shot by Alicia Goldenziel in the final seconds of the quarter would give SU an 8-6 lead going into the second quarter.
The River Hawks would have their best offensive stretch in the second quarter, stretching their lead as far as nine points and shooting a game-high 31.25 percent as a team. The tides would turn in the second half as Dickinson began to steadily improve their shooting, almost solely relying on sophomore Clair Marion, who came into the game leading the Red Devils in scoring and continued that trend. She would finish the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds, attempting 26 of Dickinson's 63 total shot attempts.
Dickinson slowly pulled away, taking the lead halfway through the third quarter and seeing the score reach 30-23 in their favor by the end of the quarter. That seven-point gap stretched to 15 as Dickinson scored eight unanswered points to begin the fourth quarter, with SU unable to score until the 4:33 mark in the quarter when Isabella Schwabe made a jumper. Five-straight makes from the foul line by Dickinson pushed the lead to 18, and time was not on the side of the River Hawks in their hopes of mounting a comeback.
Kaitlyn Lynch led Susquehanna in scoring with eight points, while first-years Julia Pinckert and Vanessa Sabol tied to lead the team in rebounds with seven each. Dickinson would make six three-pointers to SU's four, with Marion making all six. That combined with the Red Devils winning the rebounding battle 49-38 would give them a platform to hold their lead despite their shooting struggles.
SU will now embark on an extended road stretch, with their next home game not coming until January 18th. They'll begin the seven straight games away from home with a trip to Stevens Institute on Saturday, December 10 for a 6:00 pm tipoff and a chance to end their two-game losing skid.
