SELINSGROVE, PA (February 26, 2022) -- Senior attack
Caroline Chase had a game for the record books on Saturday afternoon against Alvernia University, posting a Landmark Conference and Susquehanna University program record 15 points while also earning her 100th point as the River Hawks exploded past the Golden Wolves 24-9 in non-conference play from Sassafras Field.
Chase broke the previous Landmark Conference points in a game record of 13 previously held by Katie Buonpastore of Catholic (3/16/09) and Meaghan McMullan of Moravian (3/16/19), while earning her 100th career point with a fourth-quarter assist late in the contest. For the contest, Chase finished with six goals and nine assists, as the nine assists set a program record as well.
Things were slow to get going for the River Hawks (2-1), as Alvernia University posted the opening three goals as Haleigh Lackner tallied twice around an Olivia McCambly score for the Golden Wolves. Chase got the River Hawks on the board at 7:47 of the first quarter, and then set up
Hannah McNamara to make it 3-2 AU with 5:11 left in the first quarter. After the Golden Wolves scored to stop SU's mini-run, Susquehanna posted three more before the end of the first stanza, as
Kelsey Homberg had her seventh goal of the season followed by back-to-back tallies from
Heather Riefenhauser to make it 5-4 SU after 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, the two teams stayed close until the River Hawks finished the half on a 4-0 run thanks highlighted by two tallies from first-year attack
Liv Owen to make it 10-7 at the intermission.
After the halftime hiatus Susquehanna ramped up its offensive attack, pouring in 10 goals in the third period with six coming either on a goal or assist from Chase. Chase scored twice in the fourth quarter to tie the Landmark Conference record, and then set up first-year
Emma Kelleher's first collegiate goal with 2:22 to go to break the league mark for points in a game. Minutes later, Chase got to 100 points for her career thanks to an assist on a
Makenzy Backus score as time expired.
Chase took a team-high nine shots on goal, adding five ground balls while causing a turnover as well. Riefenhauser finished with five points on three goals and two assists, while McNamara also posted three scores and an assist. Owen registered her first career hat trick and classmate
Allie Kutler tallied twice to go with a team-high seven draw controls. Homberg also had a strong game with seven draw controls, two goals, an assist and two ground balls.
Katie Hoerman also posted five draw controls in the victory.
SU outshot its foes 47-25 for the game, and
Emmy Regan picked up the win between the pipes with 13 saves for Susquehanna. Erica Whitmoyer posted four points on two goals and two assists to pace Alvernia, while Lackner and Natalie Frantz each scored three goals.
