Baseball Earns Extra Inning Victory As River Hawks Split Doubleheader at Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (March 13, 2022) -- Senior Evan Knapp doubled in the eventual game-winning run in the 12th inning of game one, lifting the Susquehanna University baseball team to a 3-2, extra-inning victory over Methodist University in action from Armstrong-Shelley Field Sunday. SU dropped the final game of the weekend series 14-4 in the night cap.

Game 1: Susquehanna 3, Methodist 2 - 12 Innings
The River Hawks got great pitching in Sunday's opener, while Knapp drove in Michael Biuso in the top of the 12th inning to help clinch the victory over the Monarchs in game one.

Susquehanna took the early lead in the contest, as Sean McCulloch doubled to start the contest and eventually came around to score on a RBI single from Adam Schreck. The River Hawks doubled their lead in the top of the fifth, as Schreck delivered another RBI single, this time plating first-year Tyler Hmielewski who had led off the inning with a walk.

River Hawk starter Teagan Duffie cruised into the fifth inning, as he didn't surrender a base hit until a one-out single int the bottom of the fifth. The Monarchs though would get on the board in the frame, as Duffie was replaced by Aidan Martin with two outs and the bases loaded. Martin would get an inning-ending strikeout to get SU out of the jam.

Methodist knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, pushing a run across with a balk with one out. Martin responded with back-to-back swinging strikeouts. Neither team would be able to get a run until the 12th when Knapp delivered the big hit. Dominic Yeager came on in the bottom of the 12th and worked around two hits and a walk to earn the save.

Schreck finished 3-for-6 with two RBI in the contest, while Knapp finished 2-for-6 with a RBI. Chris Corrado added a hit and walk as well offensively, while Biuso posted a pinch-hit double before coming around to score in the 12th.

Duffie allowed two hits and no earned runs, fanning four hitters in his start. Martin went 6.1 innings in relief, scattering five hits to pick up the win while picking up three strikeouts.

Game 2: Methodist 14, Susquehanna 4
The River Hawks pounded out 13 hits in game two of Sunday's doubleheader, but Methodist posted seven extra-base hits including a pair of homers in earning the game two victory.

Methodist took an early 4-0 lead but Schreck delivered a RBI single in the top of the third to make it 4-1. The Monarchs would add three more runs before Knapp posted a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-2 in the top of the fifth.

The River Hawks got to as close as 8-4 following a homer from Kris Morrow in the sixth inning and a Knapp RBI single in the seventh inning to plate McCulloch. Methodist would push across six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull away for the victory.

Knapp finished 2-for-3 with two RBI in game two, while Biuso tallied 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Scheck posted a multi-hit performance while Morrow finished 2-for-4 as well. Thomas Romanelli was 2-for-2 with a walk, and McCulloch went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
