SELINSGROVE, PA (March 23, 2022) -- Despite consistent rain and cold temperatures in the Selinsgrove, PA area all day, the Susquehanna University baseball team was able to tough it out to earn an emphatic 16-6 win over visiting Albright College in non-conference play from Bollinger Field Wednesday afternoon.
The rain was falling throughout the entire game but that didn't affect the River Hawk hitters, as SU pounded out a season-high 17 hits as 13 different hitters posted at least one knock on the day. The 17 hits were the most in a game since the River Hawks chalked up 18 in a 17-0 win over Juniata back on April 20, 2019.
Susquehanna (5-11) wasted no time jumping out in front, as senior designated hitter singled in two runs in the bottom of the first to put SU out in front. Albright (1-15) would come right back with three of its own, two coming on a SU miscue that made the score 3-2 in favor of the visitors.
The Lion lead was short-lived, as
Kris Morrow plated a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly line out to make it 3-3. In the bottom of the third, Susquehanna tacked on four more runs, as
Lance Book crushed a double to left-center to score
Tony Rossi and Schreck. Book stole third two pitches later, and came across thanks a run scoring ground out by
Michael Biuso to make it 6-3.
Chris Corrado tripled to left-center and Morrow would drive him in two batters later with a RBI single through the left side to up SU's lead to four at 7-3.
SU added two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 11-3 lead going into the top of the sixth. Albright would make it a game though with three runs in the top of the sixth, but five runs by Susquehanna in the bottom of the frame highlighted by a
Michael Mancuso two-run single all but iced the win for the hosts. The game was called after 6.5 innings due to the rain picking up along with the loss of daylight.
Sean McCulloch posted a 2-for-4 day with a run scored, while Morrow went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Schreck was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Rossi was 2-for-3 as well.
Brock Veit was 1-for-1 with a two-run single and Corrado reached three times as he went 1-for-1 with two walks and a run.
The offense was plenty for Susquehanna starter
Cole Bernier, who tossed 5.2 innings while allowing five hits and three earned runs, striking out four. First-year Jimmy Greco came on for his second appearance at SU, allowing just one hit while walking two.
