SELINSGROVE, PA (April 14, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University softball team fell in game one to visiting King's College 5-4, but rallied to take a 4-2 win in game two over the Monarchs in non-conference action from Sassafras Softball Field Thursday night.
Game 1: King's 5, Susquehanna 4
Susquehanna led 4-0 going into the sixth inning, but the Monarchs tallied five times in the top half to rally for the 5-4 win in the opening tilt of the day.
SU took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third as the rally was started by a
Hannah Roland single up the middle.
Erin Bean singled down the left-field line with one out, and
Lexi Palumbo stepped up a batter later and singled in a run to make it 1-0. Two batters later, senior
Kiara Bryant stepped up and laced a single to right field to bring him both Bean and Palumbo.
Susquehanna tacked on another run in the top of the fourth, as Roland knocked in
Morgan Henry who led off with a double to left field.
In the decisive sixth inning, King's scored all five runs with two outs, taking the lead on a Kiesten Krouse double to score Olivia Krupski and Hannah Farr. SU was unable to get a runner on in the sixth and seventh as the Monarchs secured the victory.
Susquehanna was led offensively by Roland, who went 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored. Bryant was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two walks, while Palumbo finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
SU starter
Gabby Bubba allowed nine hits over 5.2 innings surrendering five runs, while
Lily Hochhausler came in out of the bullpen to work 1.1 frames of sparkling relief.
Game 2: Susquehanna 4, King's 2
Susquehanna once again took a 4-0 lead in game two, but was able to keep the Monarchs at bay until the seventh inning in taking the second contest to salvage a sweep.
The River Hawks got on the board in the first with a single run thanks at a RBI single from
Ashley Warner. SU tallied on two more runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a RBI single by
Zoe Bork.
Susquehanna tacked on one more in the bottom of the sixth, as
Erin Bean doubled down the right-field line to plate
Hailey Kaba. SU had chances to bust open the game multiple times, but left runners on in five of seven innings.
King's pushed two runs across in the bottom of the seventh, but Susquehanna got a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play to end the game.
Bean posted two hits in three at-bats for the hosts in game two, scoring once and driving in a run as seven of the nine starters had at least one hit for SU.
Katie Murphy was strong in the circle, allowing just two runs while striking out 15 batters. The 15 strikeouts in a game is a school record, trying the Landmark Conference record for strikeouts in a contest.
