Softball Secures Key Doubleheader Split At Moravian Saturday

SELINSGROVE, PA (April 23, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University softball team dropped a tight 1-0 battle in game one to host Moravian University, but bounced back with a 6-0 win in game two to pick up a key Landmark Conference doubleheader split in action from Blue and Grey Field Saturday.

Game 1: Moravian 1, Susquehanna 0
The Greyhounds plated the only run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single by Ajala Elmore, giving Moravian all the runs it would need in the 1-0 win. Madison Hummel was strong in the circle for the Greyhounds as she allowed five hits and no runs.

The River Hawks had their first opportunity with runners in scoring position in the top of the third, as Erin Bean doubled with one out. Bean would get stranded at second though, as Hummel got Lexi Palumbo to ground out before Ashley Warner flew out to left field.

After Moravian (23-3, 7-1 Landmark) made it 1-0 in the fifth, Susquehanna's best chance to score came in the top of the seventh as Morgan Henry singled to start the rally. The River Hawks pushed runners to first and second after a hit by pitch, but Hannah Roland popped out to end the game.

Five different players had hits for the River Hawks, as Warner, Kiara Bryant, Zoe Bork, Henry and Bean all reached safely on hits. Gabby Bubba allowed two hits and two walks as the starter in game one over two innings, while Katie Murphy gave up three hits and an earned run over four innings out of the bullpen.

Game 2: Susquehanna 6, Moravian 0
The River Hawks (19-7, 7-1 Landmark) busted open a 1-0 game in the top of the seventh in game two, plating five runs to pull away for the victory while securing the split.

Neither team got much going until the fourth inning, when Morgan Henry singled with one out to get the rally going. Katie Koch and Nicole Plesh each followed with singles, as Henry came around to score on Plesh's base hit.

That's how the game would stay until the seventh inning, as SU plated five runs to make it a 6-0 game. Kiara Bryant pushed across Susquehanna's second run with a RBI single, and Zoe Bork provided the big blast with a three-run shot to right center to make it 5-0. Plesh posted another RBI single three batters later for more insurance.

Bubba allowed four hits over four innings of work in game two to earne the win, while Murphy recorded another save after surrendering just one hit over three innings, fanning six Greyhound hitters.

Bork finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Warner was 2-for-2 as well as she reached base all four times at bat. Henry went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double, while Koch and Plesh were each 2-for-4.
