SELINSGROVE, PA (April 24, 2022) -- Senior
Ethan Cooley came through with a straight set win with the score tied at four to clinch a big Landmark Conference victory for the Susquehanna University men's tennis team over Moravian University in action from Hoffman Courts Sunday.
The River Hawks (9-3, 4-1 Landmark) fell behind after Anthony Ronca and Wyatt Marshall topped
Conor Ryan and
Emil Vyskocil 8-5 at the No. 1 position. Moravian also won at No. 3 doubles, but
John Duncan and
Joshua Sanderson outlasted Andrew Hozza and Kieran Pisani 8-5.
Down 2-1 heading into singles, Susquehanna needed to win four of the six singles' matches to clinch the victory. Sanderson earned his second win of the day at No. 2 singles, cruising to a 7-5, 6-4 win over Zachary Lebby. Sanderson has won four in a row in singles, winning all eight sets in his matches.
Pisani outlasted
Tim Basta at No. 3 singles 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1), followed by a Moravian win at No. 5 singles to push the Moravian lead to 4-2. With their backs against the wall, the River Hawks had to win the final three matches to earn the team triumph.
The comeback started at No. 1 singles, as Vyskocil rallied for a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 thrilling win at No. 1 to keep SU's hopes alive. Vyskocil has now won two in a row, and also picked up his third three-set win of the season.
Due to an illness,
Alex Baker had to move up to No. 4 singles and picked up a big 7-5, 7-5 win to tie the match at four wins apiece. The fate for both teams would come down to No. 6 singles, as Steve Schneider of Moravian and Cooley of SU were battling it out. Cooley was not scheduled to play singles Sunday, but due to an illness was thrust into the huge spot.
The senior would take advantage, as he won the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker, before going up a break in the second set to clinch the victory with a 6-4 win in the second set. It marked the second time this season that Cooley has clinched a win for the River Hawks. He also moved to 5-2 in singles this season, and has won two straight.
With the victory, the River Hawk men's squad clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
