Murphy Breaks Landmark Single Game Strikeout Mark In Sweep Of Dickinson Thursday

CARLISLE, PA (April 28, 2022) -- Senior hurler Katie Murphy set the Susquehanna University and Landmark Conference record for strikeouts in a game with 18, allowing one hit in game two as the River Hawks completed a sweep of Dickinson College Thursday evening. SU won the first game 4-2 before Murphy and SU topped the host Red Devils 6-0 in game two.

Game 1: Susquehanna 4, Dickinson 2
Senior Kiara Bryant went 4-for-4 with a double, leading the River Hawks to a win in the opening game of the day. SU connected on four doubles in the game, including one by Erin Bean in the top of the third to put the River Hawks up 1-0.

Later in the frame, Bryant singled in Lexi Palumbo to make it 2-0. The River Hawks would extend their lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth, as Bryant doubled to start the inning followed by a RBI double from Zoe Bork. Three batters later, Nicole Plesh singled in Bork from second base to push the lead to four.

The Red Devils would plate two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Gabby Bubba nailed down the win with a pop out and ground out. Palumbo finished 2-for-4 with a double, while Plesh finished 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.

Bubba went 6.2 innings for the River Hawks in the circle, striking out six while allowing no runs and just two hits.

Game 2: Susquehanna 6, Dickinson 0
Murphy was the star of game two, as she broke the Landmark Conference and SU record for strikeouts in a game with 18. The previous record of 15 set by Murphy earlier this season, along with Alyssa Erb and Kelsea Decker of Juniata. The 18 strikeouts was the fourth-most in a game in Division III this season.

The River Hawks (23-7) were able to put six runs on the board for Murphy, which was plenty as she allowed just one hit in the complete-game shutout. Susquehanna plated two in the top of the first, as Bryant brought around Erin Bean and Ashley Warner with her seventh triple of the year.

Bork connected on a three-run double in the top of the third to make it 5-0, and Rosemarie Mirabella singled in a run in the top of the fourth to make it a six-run game.

Murphy struck out the first seven outs of the game for Dickinson, as she retired 15 in a row while taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Red Devils (10-23) would break up the no-no with a Celia Vinacco single to left field with two outs in the frame. Murphy responded with a strikeout to end the inning. In the seventh, she retired the Red Devils 1-2-3 to clinch the win. Through the middle of the game, she had a stretch of eight straight punch outs.

The win was the second one-hit, complete-game shutout of the season for Murphy, allowing just two base runners as she moved to 14-2 on the season. Over her last 21 innings, she's allowed five hits while fanning 44 batters.

Offensively, Mirabella posted a career-high three hits while adding an RBI. Bork was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Bryant finished the day with a 2-for-4 outing, driving in two RBI. Warner was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Bean moved to within four hits of 100 for her career with a 1-for-3 contest, also scoring twice.
