Chase Breaks Single Season Points Mark In Season Finale at Drew

MADISON, NJ (April 30, 2022) -- Senior attack Caroline Chase finished a brilliant season and career Saturday, as she tallied 11 points to get to 122 on the season, breaking the Landmark Conference single-season points mark in a 20-14 loss to Drew University in the 2022 season finale.

Chase eclipsed the previous record of 121, held by Catholic University's Kate Robinson since the 2009 season. For the year, Chase finished with 52 goals and 77 assists, as her assist total blew the previous Landmark Conference single-season mark of 54 out of the water. Chase had four games with 10 or more points this season, highlighted by the Landmark Conference record of 15 against Alvernia University on February 26.

As for Saturday, the River Hawks came into the contest needing a victory by four or more goals to clinch a Landmark Conference playoff spot. Unfortunately, an 8-0 run in the first quarter by the Rangers put a damper on a quick two-goal lead by the River Hawks. Drew led by as much as six in the first half, but Susquehanna rallied back with four straight goals to make it 11-9 Drew just after halftime.

The Rangers answered with five consecutive strikes to take a 16-9 lead midway through the third quarter before Kelsey Homberg scored along with a Chase goal to make it 17-12. Chase would score an unassisted goal with 9:38 to go to trim the Drew lead to four at 17-13, but Drew pulled away late for the win.

Homberg tied her career high for goals in a game with five Saturday, adding six draw controls and three ground balls. Allie Kutler added five draw controls along with a goal and assist, while Heather Riefenhauser tallied two assists. Nikki Genovese came off the bench to have a nice game with a goal and assist, and Caitlin Harvey posted three draw wins along with a goal.

Defensively, Katie Quackenboss caused a pair of turnovers, while Liz Owen scooped up three ground balls. Emmy Regan made 11 saves in between the pipes, adding a team-high five ground balls. The team stats were tight, with Drew holding a slight 41-36 edge on shots while SU posted a 23-21 edge on ground balls.

The contest was the last in the orange and maroon for a pair of seniors, as Chase and Katie Hoerman finish their fantastic careers with the River Hawks. Each played and started every game they played at Susquehanna. Chase finished her tenure at Susquehanna with 194 points, whick is the fifth-most in a career. She also is the all-time leader in assists with 100, while her 52 goals this year were the ninth-most in a season.

Lizzy Barrett had a team-high nine points for Drew in the win, scoring six times, while Hailey Simmons finished with five goals for the Rangers. Anna Horne also tallied 14 saves in the victory for the hosts.
