SELINSGROVE, PA (May 1, 2022) -- Visiting Catholic University was able to close out a three-game sweep of host Susquehanna University Sunday, knocking off the River Hawks 8-6 in Landmark Conference baseball action at Bollinger Field.
Catholic (28-10, 14-4 Landmark) jumped out on top as Zach Burton singled in a run to make it 1-0 in the top of the third. Susquehanna responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, as
Evan Knapp and
Sean McCulloch converted a double steal to tie the game at one.
Adam Schreck singled in Knapp a batter later to put the River Hawks ahead.
The Cardinals tallied two in the top of the fourth, including a solo homer by Lucas Malave to make it 3-2. Susquehanna regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as
Kris Morrow singled in
Michael Biuso who had singled to lead off the frame. Morrow would come around to score on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The back-and-forth game would continue in the top of the sixth, as Billy Duke singled in a run and Dante Pozzi connected on a two-run double down the left-field line to put CUA up 6-4. Ben Nardi led off the top of the seventh with a solo shot to extend Catholic's lead to three.
The River Hawks had another rally going in the bottom of the eighth, as
Adam Schreck doubled to center field to bring around pinch-runner CJ Latham.
Lance Book reached a batter later to bring up
Chris Corrado. The graduate student looked like he had extra bases with a shot to right field, but Duke made a great catch to kill the rally.
After Catholic scored once in the top of the ninth, SU once again brought the winning run to the plate after
Tony Rossi singled and pinch runner
Camryn Eberly came around on a double by
Sean McCulloch. Morrow walked to put the tying run at first base but Brandon Martin got a strikeout to end the game.
Morrow went 3-for-4 on the day with a walk, stolen base, RBI and run scored, while McCulloch was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, a RBI and run scored. Schreck was also 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double.
Kyle Sears went 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing six hits, four earned runs while striking out four batters.
Peter Giombetti was 2-for-3 with two walks, and Pozzi added two hits and two RBI in the win for Catholic. Taylor Alch got the win, going seven innings while fanning 12 batters.
