Baseball Clinches Landmark Conference Playoff Spot With 10-4 Win Over Juniata

HUNTINGDON, PA (May 5, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University baseball team got the victory it needed Thursday afternoon, knocking off host Juniata College in the regular season finale 10-4 to clinch a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament.

With the victory, Susquehanna (15-23) will now take on either Catholic University or the University of Scranton next Friday, May 13 at Scranton in the Landmark Conference opening round.

The River Hawks had chances in each of the first two innings to get on the board, but stranded three runners on base. SU would finally get some run support for starting pitcher Tyler Rigot, pushing across two runs in the top of the third on an error and RBI single from Lance Book

The game stayed at 2-0 through the top of the sixth inning, but the RIver Hawks blew it open with six runs to make it 8-0. Kris Morrow put Susquehanna up 4-0 with a two-run single to left field, followed by a RBI knock by Evan Knapp

Morrow would score on an error by the catcher with Knapp going to third, and Adam Schreck plated Knapp with a sacrifice fly to put SU up seven. Chris Corrado finished the rally with a RBI single.

Juniata would finally get to Rigot in the bottom of the sixth, but the left-hander allowed just one run on one hit to keep the Eagles at bay. In the top of the eighth, Brock Veit shot a single to left field to add on another run, while Morrow tacked on another run in the ninth to make it 10-1. JC notched three runs in the bottom half, but Susquehanna held on for the big victory.

Sean McCulloch led the River Hawks with a 4-for-6 afternoon, stealing two bags and scoring three times. McCulloch now has 30 stolen bases, which tied the school record set by Matt Ruane back in 2007. Morrow was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs score, while Knapp and Corrado each posted multi-hit games.

Veit was 1-for-1 with three walks, a hit by pitch and a run scored. Rigot picked up his second win of the year, going six innings while fanning seven hitters and scattering five hits. Ryan Redmond and Vin Mariella each worked scoreless innings of relief as well for the River Hawks.
