SELINSGROVE, PA (September 17, 2022) – After a three-game winning streak on the road, Susquehanna University Field Hockey returned home to host Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon. Despite a strong showing throughout the game from the River Hawks, they were unable to tally a goal and with both teams scoreless, the game went to overtime. After being mostly shut down during the regulation periods, Gettysburg forced consecutive penalty corners early in the first overtime period and were able to win a scramble in front of goal moments later to score the only goal of the game and take the victory.
SU was dominant in possession from the beginning of the match, not allowing Gettysburg to even tally a shot until the 3rd period. The River Hawks' offense did struggle to break through the Bullets' back line though, with just two shots in the first period and three in the second. One of their best chances came very early on, with SU winning a penalty corner only 40 seconds into the match. Ashley Schreffler inserted the ball well and Kari Schmidt got off a nearly uncontested shot near the top of the circle, but ultimately put it just above the cage. Period two saw Emma Campitelli and Rebecca Ripans both draw saves from Gettysburg's goalkeeper with good shots.
Gettysburg produced a small surge of momentum after halftime, tallying their only two shots in regulation during the third period, one of which forced a save from SU keeper Mackenzie Bross. The River Hawks would quickly stamp out any offensive chances for the Bullets and pushed to transition down field, but the perfect move just never quite materialized.
After outshooting Gettysburg 10-2 in regulation and earning eight penalty corners to Gettysburg's 2 in regulation, the Bullets quite literally shot out of the gates in overtime, piling early pressure on SU's defense and forcing back-to-back penalty corners. That pressure paid off just 2:51 into overtime as a quick break into the offensive end and a crossing pass gave Gettysburg a little daylight through SU's defense and slotting home a shot to take the victory.
Susquehanna will hit the road for another extended stretch over the next two weeks, taking on York College (PA) on September 20 before visiting Elizabethtown College of September 24 for their Landmark Conference opener.
