MIDDLETOWN, CT (September 24, 2022) – The Susquehanna University volleyball team continued their weekend trip north with two matches in Connecticut, hosted by No. 16 Wesleyan University. First facing the hosts, the River Hawks were swept 3-0 with scores of 19-25, 21-25, and 15-25. However, they rediscovered winning form in their second match of the day, facing No. 24 Tufts University. They took a 3-1 win with scores of 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, and 25-23.
Match 1: Wesleyan 3, Susquehanna 0
The River Hawks struggles on offense seemed to carry over from their Friday night match against NYU, as they again were inefficient with their hitting. They tallied a .139 percentage in the first set, which would prove to be their highest mark in the three sets. They finished with a .061 total, while Wesleyan managed a .179. While the total wasn't high for Wesleyan, it was enough for them to stay out in front of SU throughout all three sets. The River Hawks had 23 errors to Wesleyan's ten, putting them at a major disadvantage.
No River Hawk reached double digit totals in kills, with Rosina Esposito finishing the match with nine on a .250 hitting percentage. Keira Roach led the way with assists as usual, but reached a total of only 17, a season-low total indicative of the offensive struggles for SU.
Match 2: Susquehanna 3, Tufts 1
After those struggles kept them out of the running in match one, match two saw the River Hawks make far fewer mistakes and take advantage of a Tufts team that made quite a few of their own. The Jumbos racked up 27 errors in the match, so while their hitting percentage of .123 wasn't too far short of Susquehanna's .165, the errors proved to be a difference maker. The River Hawks also were dominant at the net, tallying 12 blocks to Tufts' four. Graduate student Kody Dillon had a standout performance, with five solo blocks and a block assist, along with six digs, two kills, and two assists.
Esposito led in kills again, this time with a more typical total of 17, while Ryan Rorls also reached double digits with 12. Roach had 25 assists and also led the team with two aces.
SU is now 7-6 on the year, with Landmark Conference play next on the schedule. They'll begin with a tri-match on October 1, hosted by Catholic University in Washington, DC. They'll take on No. 4 Juniata College at 1:30 pm before facing the hosts at 6:30 pm.
