River Hawks Battle Back to Take 2-1 Victory at Home

SELINSGROVE, PA (September 7, 2022) – Coming off a strong showing over the weekend that saw them take an 8-1 victory over Delaware Valley University, the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team continued their positive momentum on Wednesday evening with a home victory over visiting Dickinson College. After falling behind 1-0 early in the second half, the River Hawks scored two unanswered goals to take a dramatic victory on a rainy night at Sassafras Field.

SU would spend much of the first half in their own end, defending against a well-disciplined passing offense from Dickinson, but coped with the pressure well and managed to prevent the Red Devils from breaking through for any big scoring chances.

After being outshot 4-1 in the first half, the River Hawks turned up the heat on offense to begin the second half, pushing the ball downfield repeatedly in the first few minutes. Despite SU seizing the momentum, the opening goal would come for Dickinson instead, with the Red Devils nabbing a goal on a scramble in the box off a crossed ball against the run of play. The lead would be short-lived though, as only two minutes later, senior Gillian Maack jumped on a free ball inside the Dickinson box to bury the equalizer in the back of the net.

With the scored knotted at one apiece, both teams pushed for a winner, with each offense flowing more freely and churning out chances. The final whistle drew closer as a potential draw looked more likely, but Marley Sprenkel would at last break the deadlock in dramatic fashion. Getting on the end of a beautifully crossed ball from junior Ellie Betheil, Sprenkel placed her shot just beneath the crossbar in top right corner of the goal to beat the outstretched glove of the keeper, notching her third goal of the season and the game winner.

SU moves to 2-1 in the early goings of the 2022 season and will next take to the road for their first away matches of the year. On Saturday, September 10 at 11:00 AM, the River Hawks will square off with No.1 ranked Christopher Newport University, the reigning national champions. Then the following day at 1:00 PM, they'll stay in Virginia to take on Virginia Wesleyan University.
