Juniata Stops Men's Hoops To Snap Five-Game Winning Streak

HUNTINGDON, PA (January 18, 2023) -- The Susquehanna University men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday evening, as the River Hawks dropped a Landmark Conference road battle at Juniata College 66-53 inside Memorial Gymnasium.

Shooting woes were the main factor for the River Hawks (8-8, 3-2 Landmark) not being able to extend their winning stretch, as Susquehanna was just 23-of-56 (41.1 percent) from the field including making just two of its 13 three-pointers. SU also struggled at the line, making 35.7 percent from the line as it missed nine free throws on the night.

Juniata (12-4, 5-0 Landmark) led for much of the first 10 minutes before a lay-up by Brandon Lavitt gave SU a 14-12 lead. A three-pointer by Juniata's Tyler Lapetina would put the Eagles back on top minutes later, and a 9-2 run to end the first half gave the hosts a 34-25 lead at the break.

The Eagles momentum would continue out of the locker room, as Juniata scored 14 of the first 15 points of the second half to take a 22-point lead at 48-26. Susquehanna got its deficit down to single digits with 7:33 to play on a Marcus Mitchell bucket, but another 8-2 run by the Eagles put the game out of reach for SU.

Sophomore Isaiah Oluajayi had his best game of the season, as he was 6-of-9 from the field to set new career-highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes. Senior Quincy Haughton added nine points while Mitchell also finished with nine points and two rebounds as he made all but one of his field goals.

First-year Emezie Egeonu finished with eight points and three rebounds, and senior Howie Rankine, Jr. also added seven points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. The loss to Juniata snapped a five-game winning streak over the Eagles, daing back to 2019-20, and was only the third loss to Juniata since 2015 (11-3).

The Eagles got a game-high 15 points from Lapetina, while Chase Husted also totaled 14 points and nine rebounds. Nick Rigby also totaled 10 points as JC was 48.9 percent from the floor while making 17-of-26 from the free throw line.

SU will host Moravian University Saturday at 4 p.m. in Landmark Conference play from O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
