SELINSGROVE, PA (October 14, 2023) – The Susquehanna field hockey team took to the field on a rainy Saturday afternoon with plenty to play for as they hosted Landmark opponent Moravian. Celebrating Senior Day, the River Hawks also had the chance to clinch a berth in the Landmark postseason with a win. The performance would match the stakes, as SU pulled off a gritty 2-1 victory over the visiting Greyhounds.
The offenses were slow to get started in the rainy conditions, as neither team managed a single shot for more than 25 minutes, getting well into the second quarter before managing just one each in the period, neither looking like they'd found much of an opening in the opposing defense.
Susquehanna would come out of the halftime break hungry, having their best quarter as they racked up four shots, seven penalty corners, and found the back of the cage thanks to Sarah McAndrews, who commemorated her Senior Day with the opening goal, latching onto a rebounded save and firing home.
Moravian would not go quietly, responding with a well-worked corner play in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, seeing a back post tap-in beat Ashley Derrick to tie the game at one each. However, SU would match the Greyhounds with less than five minutes to go in the game. A penalty corner insert from Lydia Hidlay yielded a shot for senior Katie Bucher, who made the most of the chance and scored her own Senior Day goal, putting the River Hawks back in front. SU's defense held firm for the final minutes, overcoming the rainy conditions to get the key result.
The River Hawks will be right back in action at home on Wednesday, October 18, hosting Juniata College for a 7 pm start, hoping to remain unbeaten in conference play.
