Football Hits the Road for Landmark Matchup at Keystone

LA PLUME, PA - Susquehanna moves into the midway point of its season this Saturday with a 5-0 record and a Landmark win in last week's conference opener as the River Hawks travel to face Keystone for a 1 p.m. kickoff. A Susquehanna win will set a new school record for consecutive regular season wins with 17 that dates back to 2021's regular season finale. This will surpass the record set by the 1985-87 era of SU football, with the undefeated 1986 regular season serving as the cornerstone of that period.

SUSQUEHANNA MOVES ONE SPOT FURTHER UP BOTH D3FOOTBALL.COM/AFCA NATIONAL RANKINGS

With a Landmark Conference win over Catholic to open their conference season, Susquehanna jumped one more spot on the D3football.com and AFCA National Rankings at #11 and #12, respectively. After spending the first two weeks at their #22 preseason spot by D3football.com, the River Hawks' 38-35 comeback win at SUNY Cortland throttled them up the rankings to #15 in D3football.com and #16 in the AFCA's opening poll, followed by moving three spots up both polls after their 26-18 win over Western New England.

RIVER HAWKS SEEK HISTORY IN HISTORICAL MATCHUP WITH KEYSTONE...
Susquehanna had no idea that their 65-0 win over Juniata in their regular season finale on Nov. 13, 2021 would start a stretch that would last until Saturday's matchup at Keystone, where a win will give the River Hawks a school-record 17 straight regular season victories. This will surpass the record set by the 1985-87 era of SU Football, with the centerpiece being the undefeated 1986 regular season under head coach Rocky Rees. Another piece of history entering today is the matchup itself between Susquehanna and Keystone. Both sides squared off only once before on Oct. 15, 1938, which Keystone won by a 32-14 score. After a 71-year layoff, Keystone returned football to its athletics slate in 2019, making the move to the Landmark as associate members for football after spending the previous two seasons in the ECFC.

SU POSTS IMPRESSIVE WIN OVER CATHOLIC TO OPEN LANDMARK SEASON...
Head coach Tom Perkovich's team didn't take their inaugural Landmark Conference game against Catholic lightly last Saturday, and most would agree that mindset paid off in the form of a well-executed 50-21 victory. The River Hawks controlled the action from the outset, sparked by a 36-yard return by Kyle Howes on the opening kickoff that set SU up on its own 49. Howes went on to score the first two touchdowns on passes from Josh Ehrlich for the early 14-0 lead. Defensive lineman Tim Pherson Jr. had a day with a fumble recovery to diffuse what appeared to be a promising opening drive for the Cardinals, then later contributed one sack.

17 unanswered points in the third quarter to lead 36-7 prompted a string of River Hawks to excel in the fourth quarter. Any good feelings from Catholic after a Cardinals touchdown were grounded when special teamer Dominic Winn returned the ensuing kickoff back 94 yards for the team's first kick return touchdown of the season. QB2 Bobby Croyle got SU's last score of the day with a deceptive fake handoff to spring him free for an 11-yard touchdown run.
