Football Breaks Consecutive Regular Season Wins Record with 69-0 Shutout at Keystone

LA PLUME, PA – Following a 50-point explosion to win their Landmark opener last weekend, Susquehanna football set a new season high in points Saturday with a 69-0 victory at Keystone. The win puts Susquehanna at 6-0 (2-0 Landmark) on the season and sole possession of the school record for consecutive regular season wins with 17, surpassing the mark set by the 1985-87 era of SU Football, with the unbeaten 1986 campaign serving as the cornerstone of that period.

The River Hawks led modestly after the first quarter 7-0 when quarterback Josh Ehrlich found slot receiver Warren Griffith for his first touchdown reception of the season from 16 yards out halfway through the quarter to cap off a six-minute drive. Their following drive was an unprecedented 18-play, eight-minute drive that spanned 99 yards, which culminated in a one-yard run by Ehrlich. Kyle Howes got the next touchdown for Susquehanna on its next drive with a 31-yard run, followed by Ehrlich netting another rushing touchdown before halftime to enter intermission 27-0.

Susquehanna then went on a 28-point scoring spree in the third quarter, spurred on by their opening drive to start the half that took just two plays to cover 60 yards. With Dominic Winn's return of 28 yards setting the River Hawks on their own 40, running back Tommy Grabowski broke free for a 41-yard run, then scored on the following play for a 19-yard touchdown. Fellow back D.K. Wyche found the endzone on their next drive with a one-yard run, capping off a drive that covered 45 yards on nine plays and 4:45 of possession time. Keystone's ensuing drive was one and done, as Donald Leach's pass on the opening play of the drive was picked off the Tim Macko to set the River Hawks up at KC's 46. For the second straight week, quarterback Bobby Croyle took the field and dazzled, running it for 41 yards for the team's next touchdown.

Wyche again found the endzone for the last score of the quarter on a four-yard run. The running game proved to be an effective weapon on the River Hawks' next scoring drive, with the legs of Matt Surtz and Nolan Larkin pushing Susquehanna to the red zone, bolstered by a 49-yard run from Larkin. Their only passing play of the drive resulted in points as Croyle connected with Cole Cooper for a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Giants' ensuing drive ended abruptly two plays in, this time giving Susquehanna six more points as Josh Lesesne intercepted a pass from Paul Drummond that he took 49 yards back for the last touchdown of the day.

Saturday's sizable win gives Susquehanna its first shutout win of the season and the third time this year they spilled over into 50 points or more. Coupled with last week's 50-21 win over Catholic, the River Hawks have won their first two Landmark games by a combined score of 119-21. It also marks their highest-scoring game since Nov. 23, 2019 when the River Hawks defeated Wilkes 88-24 in the MAC-Centennial Bowl.

The River Hawks were a perfect 7-for-7 in the redzone, while Keystone's offense never visited such all afternoon. Susquehanna dominated for 537 yards of total offense to the Giants' mere 51, averaging 7.1 yards on 71 plays with 35:36 of possession time. The running game netted 380 of those yards, with Grabowski running for 144 yards on 16 touches with one touchdown. Larkin took five carries for 74 yards as the game's next-highest ground gainer, while Croyle took off for two runs that stretched 54 yards. Wyche had 30 yards on six carries, while Surtz rushed for 15 yards on five carries.

Ehrlich passed for 99 yards, completing 11-of-15 with one passing touchdown and two rushing touchdowns after running for 36 yards on nine carries. Howes caught four passes for 40 yards, while Griffith caught two for 27 yards. Senior Eddie Nugent led with five receptions for 25 yards, while Chris Bookter had two receptions for 15 yards. Cooper's 12-yard reception stood as his lone catch of the day.

The defense totaled four sacks and forced four turnovers on three interceptions and one fumble. Lesesne intercepted two of those passes, one going for a touchdown, with Macko accounting for the one other. Josh Buck had one sack and one forced fumble with one fumble recovery. Garrett Carter had one sack with one forced fumble, totaling seven tackles with four solo. Cameron Noble and Brian Layton each had one sack, while Jesse Ruisch had five total tackles with three solo and one for loss, while Jake Schultes had four solo tackles with two for loss.

The River Hawks are back on the road next Saturday when they face off at Juniata at 1:00 p.m.
