SELINSGROVE, PA – Holding a 20-14 lead late in the game, Susquehanna was tasked to stop Grove City in the final two minutes in order to move past the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. With the Wolverines facing fourth and ten from the River Hawks' 13, quarterback Logan Pfeuffer threw a jump ball to the back of the endzone that Ryan Lenhart had to leap high for in one-on-one coverage with seven seconds left. Kicker Caleb Kuechly officially made it a one-point game to swipe a 21-20 victory. The River Hawks finish their season at 10-1 overall following an impressive inaugural Landmark Conference campaign that saw them go 6-0 in-conference and several high-profile victories.
Susquehanna shut down a lengthy opening Grove City drive with a fourth-down stop, setting them up for a touchdown drive to open the scoring thanks to
Tommy Grabowski's one-yard run to finish a 13-play, seven-and-a-half minute drive that spanned 70 yards to lead 7-0 after one quarter. The Wolverines countered with a 70-plus yard drive in almost half the time to tie the game shortly after, capped by running back Clayton Parrish with his longest run of the day from 28 yards out for a 7-7 tie early in the second. The match appeared to be gridlocked as the rest of the quarter played out. With Grove City lining up to attempt a 45-yard field goal late in the half, the River Hawks got a big swing of momentum when
Jake Schultes broke through the line to block the field goal, which was caught out of the air by
Keith Green III who ran it back 72 yards as Susquehanna took a 14-7 lead into halftime and the ball to start the second half.
Return ace
Kyle Howes fielded the ball to start the second half and looked to have a path to the endzone, but was tripped up by the kicker Kuechly to force SU to settle for first and ten from GCC's 32. The drive resulted in points when kicker
Christian Colasurdo booted a season-long 41 yarder for a career-best 11th field goal of the season to make it two possessions at 17-7. Grove City again answered with another marathon drive towards a Parrish touchdown, this time taking it in from 15 yards on an afternoon where he netted 122 yards on 21 carries to cut the deficit to 17-14 with 5:33 to go in the third.
Susquehanna looked to make a statement to begin the fourth, taking the ball over at their own 23 with 11:11 remaining. The River Hawks sustained another clock-bleeding drive that shaved over nine minutes off the clock to get into the red zone. The drive stopped at the 14 yard line, setting up Colasurdo with his second field goal of the afternoon from 31 yards to lead 20-14 with 1:55 to go.
With the season on the line, Grove City put on the two minute drill from their own 32 yard line with 1:49 remaining. A series of no-huddle passes moved the Wolverines up the field, bolstered by a 23-yard pass from Pfeuffer to Ryan Heckathorn. They continued to chip away, entering the redzone after converting a fourth and four to get down to the 13. Susquehanna dug in its heels to force three straight incomplete passes, giving Grove City an ultimatum with a fourth and ten with 13 seconds remaining. On their final chance, Susquehanna brought a blitz to pressure Pfeuffer, who threw a jump ball to Lenhart in the back center of the endzone on one-on-one coverage, as the 6-foot-4 tight end made a leap to haul it in for his only reception of the day to stun the home crowd with seven seconds left. Susquehanna's last gasp was a series of laterals on the ensuing kickoff, but did little to gain ground.
While the rushing game served the River Hawks well all season, Grove City held the efforts of quarterback
Josh Ehrlich and running back Grabowski to small amounts, with Ehlrich rushing for 62 yards on 15 rushes and Grabowski 42 yards on 18 carries for 2.3 yards per carry. Grabowski did, however, amass the 1,000 yard rushing mark with 1,005 on the season, giving him the 11th rushing season in school history. Susquehanna's 35 rushing touchdowns this year set a new school record.
Ehrlich went to the air 17 times, completing 13 for 90 yards as he connected with Howes six times for 39 yards and
Chris Bookter five times for 43 yards. Grabowski and
Warren Griffith each had a reception to account for the rest. Colasurdo's 2-for-2 day on field goals makes him 12-of-16 on the season, tying the season record for field goals.
The Wolverines totaled 344 yards to the River Hawks' 193, including 177 yards passing and 167 rushing. The running back Parrish used his two-touchdown day to leverage a 122-yard performance on 21 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per rush. Quarterback Pfeuffer threw for 15-of-30 for 177, targeting Scott Fraser most frequently who had eight catches for 86 yards. Heckathorn caught three for 39 yards.
Both sides had a plentiful share of third and fourth down conversions, as the River Hawks converted 3-of-10 third downs and 3-of-4 fourth downs, while the Wolverines converted 5-of-12 third-down tries and 3-of-5 fourth-down attempts, including two conversions on the final drive. Susquehanna held the edge in time of possession at 30:39.
