Susquehanna University Men's Rugby defeated #12 ranked Loyola University of Maryland in their final Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference game 39 to 14.
Susquehanna opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes with a penalty kick by FY Wing Austin Pendleton for a 3 to 0 lead. About 5 minutes later an intercepted pass by Loyola went for 60 meters and Loyola went ahead 7 to 3 before Pendleton notched another penalty kick to narrow the score to 7 to 6 at the 30 minute mark. Kyree Jennings went over 70 meters for a wild go ahead try that sent the crowd into a frenzy and put Susquehanna into the lead at 13 to 7 at halftime.Â
In the second half defensive pressure allowed Senior Center
Colman Doucette to take the ball from a ruck and go 50 meters for a score to up the lead to 18 to 7. Loyola responded with a quick try to narrow the lead to 18 to 14 with about 20 minutes left. Susquehanna used the field and worked the ball to Pendleton again for a try to up the lead to 25 to 14 with about 10 minutes left. Great defensive pressure led to another score this time by Junior Scrumhalf Denis Lynch for a 32 to 14 lead. With about 5 minutes left in the game Sophomore Wing
Elijiah Robertson who had just came to the game 2 minutes earlier as a substitute went over 50 meters for the final score of the game 39 to 14.Â
With the win Susquehanna advances to the National Collegiate Rugby Small College playoffs as the #2 team from the conference. They will play a home match against #8 ranked Christendom College (VA) on Saturday November 11th at 1pm. Winner of the match will head to the National Championship Round of 16 in Culpeper, VA on November 18 and 19th. This is Susquehanna's 2nd straight year in the national 15s playoffs. Â
