Fourth Quarter Surge Helps Women's Basketball Back Into the Win Column

ANNVILLE, PA (December 19, 2023) – Getting back to game action after more than a week off, the Susquehanna women's basketball team traveled to Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday evening, facing the Dutchmen in a non-conference matchup. A back-and-forth contest ultimately went the way of the River Hawks as they put together an impressive fourth quarter performance after trailing for most of the contest, taking a late lead and winning 59-49.

SU would be working from behind for most of the game, with LVC jumping out in front early and the River Hawks taking a lead just one time prior to their final move in front in the fourth quarter. After falling behind by seven points in the opening quarter, SU scored eight unanswered to take their first lead with two minutes left in the quarter, but the Dutchmen would reclaim the advantage before the period ended and hold onto it for the rest of the half.

The score of 13-10 would be replicated again in the second quarter, making the score 26-20 at the halftime break. LVC appeared to have a chance to put the game away in the third quarter as they stretched their lead to double digits, leading by 11 three minutes into the second half. But SU would slowly but surely work their way back, outscoring the Dutchmen 16-9 in the remainder of the quarter, primarily led by Julia Roth, who scored six of her 18 total points during that stretch.

Grace Meehan would play a key role in the comeback, coming off the bench to provide a career-high 11 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter as she would drain three shots from long range, the only makes from deep for SU on the night. Her efforts, coupled with continued scoring from Roth and Kaitlyn Lynch adding to her matching game total of 18 points, helped Susquehanna outscore LVC 21-7 in the final quarter as they took command of the lead with just under five minutes to go in the game and never looked back. Roth finished the day with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and fifth-straight game with double-digit points. Lynch came just a rebound shy of a double-double of her own, scoring 18 and grabbing nine boards.

Now 5-4 on the season, Susquehanna will wrap up 2023 in Massachusetts, playing their next game in ten days' time as they compete in the Babson Winter Tournament. They'll play the hosts on Friday, December 29 at 1 pm before taking on Colby-Sawyer College the following day at noon.
