SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna men's basketball team led Moravian by a 71-59 score with three minutes remaining Saturday at home in Landmark Conference action. Despite a furious Greyhounds run that pitted the game at 77-74 in the closing seconds, Moravian was unable to connect on a trio of field goal attempts on their last possession as the River Hawks hung on for the three-point win, upping their conference record to 2-0 in the Landmark and 4-2 overall.
The River Hawks outshot and outrebounded the Greyhounds in the contest, finishing 48.5 percent from the field (32-66) with 11-of-25 threes compared to Moravian's 40.3 percent (25-62) and 11-of-30 threes, then grabbing 46 rebounds to the Greyhounds' 31.
Marcus Mitchell led the scoring for the River Hawks with 16 points, shooting 7-of-14 with a pair of threes. On the glass
Brandon Lavitt led the team in rebounds with nine, three offensive rebounds and six defensive rebounds, and connecting for nine points in 19 minutes off the bench.
Cooper Haberern pulled off 12 points, making 4-of-9 threes, while gathering six rebounds in a team-high 36 minutes on the floor.
Both the River Hawks and the Greyhounds started the game off missing a few shots, but scoring would not take long to start after a Greyhound three-point bucket 1:49 into the game. The Greyhounds would go on a 5-0 run which would be quickly stopped as a layup from
Audric Washington gets the River Hawks on the board. After a layup from
Emezie Egeonu and a three-point shot from
Cooper Haberern the River Hawks would take a 7-5 lead with 15:25 left the contest and not lose it for the rest of the game. After some back and forth scoring the River Hawks would head into halftime with an 11-point lead, 38-27.
Coming out of halftime the River Hawks extended their lead to 14 points after another three-point shot from Haberern, which would also make him the first double digit scorer of the game. Less than one minute later the Greyhounds cut the lead down to nine, then carrying on to dwindle it to two points with the scoring being 48-46.
The River Hawks responded strongly to this adversity though as in just over four minutes they would get their lead back to double digits with a layup from Mitchell, followed by a three-point shot from
Steven Ressler to extend the lead to 13 points. The River Hawks then traded buckets back and forth with the Greyhounds until 3:09 left in the contest where another Ressler three-point shot would get the lead back up to 12 points at 71-59.
After being cut to five points, the lead would be extended to nine points after Lavitt converts an and-one layup. The Greyhounds close the gap on the lead and get within two points again after a couple of layups and three good free throw attempts brings the score to 76-74. Washington would get fouled shortly after and extend the lead to three on his first attempt from the line, missing his second attempt. This gave the Greyhounds a chance to send it to overtime with a three-point shot, but missed three field goal attempts down the other way, two 3-pointers and a long jumper, bringing the final score to 77-74, Susquehanna over Moravian.
