SELINSGROVE, PA (February 15, 2023) – The Susquehanna women's basketball team earned their fifth conference win of the season on Wednesday night, bettering their total of four from a year ago with one game still remaining on the schedule. The River Hawks faced the Gophers of Goucher College in what was SU's final home game of the season and beat Goucher 61-51.
A strong first quarter from Susquehanna gave them a lead to build on, as they would trail just twice for short stints in the opening minutes and then claimed and held the lead for the rest of the contest. Kaitlyn Lynch began the night with a made three-pointer, and it would be Lynch who scored SU's first six points, as she added three made free throws. The teams would be tied 8-8 with 5:05 on the clock in the first quarter when a layup from Isabella Schwabe gave Susquehanna that aforementioned lead, starting a nine-point run that would make the score 17-8 at the end of the quarter.
SU continued to score well in the second quarter, outscoring Goucher 16-10 to give them a double-digit advantage at halftime, leading 33-18. And for much of the third quarter, that lead would remain in the double-digits, stretching out as far as 19 points with 4:08 left in the third quarter. But the Gophers slowly fought back, clamping down on defense to force a number of SU turnovers while scoring 14 of the next 16 points to cut the gap to just seven points at the end of the third quarter.
The Gophers would get as close as four points, trailing 51-47 with 6:23 to go in the fourth, but SU would buckle down defensively and take advantage of opportunities at the foul line, with Lynch going seven for eight from the charity stripe in the final two minutes of the game to help SU stay out in front, ultimately restoring the double-digit gap by the final whistle.
Lynch led the team in scoring, the senior playing what could potentially be her final home game. She tallied 20 points, including a whopping 11 of 14 night from the foul line. She would add a season-high five assists along with four rebounds and tying for the team lead in steals with three. Vanessa Sabol also had three steals, with the team racking up 12 total on the night. Kenzie Selvaggi was the next-highest scorer with 12 points, also putting up the team lead in assists with a career-high eight. Julia Roth reached double-digit rebounds yet again this season, grabbing a team-high 10 boards.
The River Hawks will close out the season on the road, traveling to face Moravian University on Saturday, tipping off at 2 pm. Susquehanna fell in a tight contest with the Greyhounds at home earlier this season by a score of 68-65.
