NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Susquehanna University softball delivered a sweep on their second day of spring break down in North Myrtle Beach. An early morning delay due to rain did little to dampen Susquehanna's run-scoring, combining for 25 runs in their victories over Skidmore by a 12-7 margin, then drilling Keene State with 13 unanswered runs towards a 13-2 five-inning victory.
Susquehanna has a break Tuesday before reloading to take on SUNY Cortland and Ithaca College on Wednesday.
SUSQUEHANNA 12, SKIDMORE 7
The River Hawks wasted no time getting ahead with a four-run first, beginning with RBI singles from
Meredith Pavlik and
Ashley Warner.
Morgan Henry contributed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Warner, followed by a wild pitch that scored
Lexi Palumbo. Hannah Faust took the circle for SU to start, fanning seven and allowing just three earned runs (five total) on five hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Skidmore got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single, but
Meredith Pavlik got SU's lead back up to four with another RBI single to make it 5-1 after two. The Thoroughbreds cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs, but
Lexi Palumbo came through with a two-RBI double to right to regain a four-run advantage at 7-3.
Skidmore remained resilient, again putting up a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth to make things 7-5, only for the River Hawks' bats to come alive again with three runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded,
Hailey Kaba's groundout to third brought in Hannah Rolan.
Erin Bean followed two batters later with a two-RBI single. Skidmore would get one run each in the fifth and seventh innings, but the pitching work of
Ashley Grudzien and
Amanda Amerman closed the door on the SU win. Warner tacked on insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a two-RBI single.
Susquehanna totaled 13 hits as
Hailey Kaba batted 3-for-4 with one RBI, one double, and scoring three runs.
Ashley Warner batted 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
Meredith Pavlik had a 2-for-4 day with a pair of ribbies, while
Erin Bean plated two on a 1-for-3 day.
Kassidy Smith played a huge role on the basepaths on her 3-for-4 day, scoring a pair of runs with one double and one stolen base.
Grudzien pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while Amerman retired her two batters faced for the last two outs of the game.
SUSQUEHANNA 13, KEENE STATE 2
The nighttime atmosphere gave the Owls something to hoot about early, holding Susquehanna hitless through the first two innings and delivering a pair of RBI doubles in the second to take a 2-0 lead. This was the only blemish on SU pitcher
Katelyn Dugery's night, who struck out six and allowed just two earned runs on six hits with one walk.
A
Stevie Shaak leadoff single in the bottom of the third not only gave SU its first hit, but a spark that exploded into a nine-run third inning. Three batters later with the bases loaded,
Erin Bean hit a two-RBI single to tie the game, then
Ashley Warner came up next with another two-RBI double to take the lead at 4-2.
Emily Deitch got the next run with a bases-loaded walk, then on the next at bat
Madison Apostolakos reached on a fielder's choice that produced two runs off a throwing error to the plate to make it 7-2. A
Hailey Kaba RBI single and
Kassidy Smith RBI triple closed out the scoring after three to lead 9-2.
The River Hawks put up four more runs in the fourth to trigger the five-inning rule, brought on by a
Zoe Bork RBI single and a
Madison Apostolakos triple that brought in two runs, then herself scoring off a throwing error for a 13-2 lead. Dugery retired the side in the top of the fifth to end the contest.
Keene State was held to just two of their six hits after their productive second inning, though its four errors proved costly as five of the River Hawks' runs were unearned.
SU totaled 11 hits, with Bean, Warner, and Apostolakos each leading the team with two RBI's. Warner went 2-for-3 with two singles, while Bean batted 1-for-3 with one stolen base and Apostolakos 1-for-3 with one triple. Smith was 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI with two runs scored, while Kaba went 2-for-4 off a pair of singles and scoring two runs. Shaak had a 2-for-3 evening, scoring one run.
