Susquehanna Delivers Sweep on Final Day of Spring Break Trip over SUNY Poly, Salem State

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 16, 2023) – Susquehanna softball finished their stay in North Myrtle Beach with a pair of victories over SUNY Poly 3-1 and Salem State in an 8-0 five-inning decision. The River Hawks went 5-2 over the break to improve to 7-6 on the year, bringing back with them a three-game win streak. Their first contest back up north is scheduled at Messiah Thursday, Mar. 23 before starting Landmark play against Catholic Saturday, Mar. 25.
 
SUSQUEHANNA 3, SUNY POLY 1
The morning contest offered a series of early runs, with Kassidy Smith getting Susquehanna on the board in the first when she made it to third on an error to right that brought home Hailey Kaba. On the next at bat Erin Bean brought Smith home with a sacrifice fly to left. The Wildcats pounced on a run in the bottom of the first when Kimberly Birmingham's RBI triple made the score 2-1. The River Hawks got the lead back up to two in the top of the second following pitcher Brianna Jones' RBI triple.

Jones allowed just three SUNY Poly hits the rest of the way, giving up just five overall while striking out five. The game was quiet the rest of the way, with the Wildcats only threat coming in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on the corners and no outs, the River Hawks turned two when Jones caught a pop up and nabbed the runner at third. Jones then struck out Maddelyn Hoehn to get out of the inning.
SU totaled eight hits, led by two apiece from Bean and Palumbo.

SUSQUEHANNA 8, SALEM STATE 0
The River Hawks jumped ahead to two runs in the first, the opening run off an Ashley Warner groundout that score Hailey Kaba. The next came when Zoe Bork reached first when she struck out, but a passed ball got her to first and enough to score Lexi Palumbo from third. They added three more in the second off a Rosemarie Mirabella RBI single, another Warner groundout to score Hailey Kaba, and a Palumbo RBI single. Two more reached home in the third when Nicole Plesh delivered an RBI single, followed by Mirabella delivering a sac bunt to bring home Plesh. The River Hawks put an early end to the game when pinch hitter Lily Hochhausler delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the eight-run rule.

The River Hawks generated nine hits, while SU pitcher Hannah Foust gave up just five hits to the Vikings, posting five strikeouts with one walk in five innings of shutout ball. Mirabella and Warner finished the day with two RBI's, as Palumbo batted 2-for-3 with one RBI.
