WINCHESTER, Va. (March 4, 2023) – Susquehanna University opened the first of their three-game stay at the Mr. V Memorial Classic against SUNY Cortland, hosted by Shenandoah University. The 20th-ranked Red Dragons scored all of their 13 runs in the first four innings towards a 13-4 decision over the River Hawks. Susquehanna plays two on Sunday beginning with #22 SUNY Oswego at 10:00 AM, then a rematch with SUNY Cortland at 2:00 PM.
Dillan Weikel took the mound for SU to start the game, pitching the first three innings that saw SUNY Cortland deliver the first seven runs of the day off eight hits with just one extra base hit. The River Hawks got cracking with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Kris Morrow walked to lead off, then advancing to third on a
Brock Veit double and coming around to score when
Lance Book reached first on an error to short.
Tony Rossi then doubled on the next at bat to bring home Veit, followed by a
J.P. Yore groundout giving Book the clear path to the plate.
This rally attempt was thwarted with six more runs from the Red Dragons in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring five runs off four hits and two errors. The River Hawks got one run in the seventh when
Jack Cahill reached first on a throwing error from short, bringing home Yore from second.
The Red Dragons boasted 13 hits to the River Hawks' six, with Sean McCullough going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Lance, Rossi, and Yore all had one RBI, with Rossi and Veit each accounting for one double apiece on the day.
Weikel pitched 2.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout before
Landon Ness stepped in to get the final out of the third.
Josh Shiller and
Brice Gregory handled duties in the fourth, then
Nathan Dawes stepped in to pitch three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with one strikeout.
Jason Stine retired the side in the eighth with one strikeout.
