SELINSGROVE, PA (April 12, 2023) – The Susquehanna baseball team continued their strong play with a non-conference win at home on Wednesday afternoon, beating Lycoming 9-2 and claiming a fourth win in their last five games.
After a quick 1st inning for both teams, the River Hawks got to work at the plate in the bottom of the 2nd, picking up two hits but not managing any runs in the frame. That was quickly rectified in the bottom of the 3rd, as Dylan Heyduk led off with a triple before coming home to score on an RBI groundout by Tyler Hmielewski. After a flyout put the second out on the board, the River Hawks rallied with a walk, two singles, a hit by pitch, and a fielding error by the Warriors to score two more runs. Meanwhile, Lycoming would be completely stonewalled on offense, not getting their first hit until the top of the 6th inning, held in check first by SU started Jack Greco and then relief pitching efforts from Ryan Redmond, Vincent Mariella, and Harrison Keeler.
Lycoming got their first run in the top of the 7th off of an RBI single, but Susquehanna immediately restored their three-run advantage in the bottom of the frame thanks to an RBI single from Lance Book. They would then pile on plenty of insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th, scoring five runs on six hits, including an RBI double from Heyduk. The Warriors picked up one run in the top of the 9th, but never looked like putting together a comeback effort, and the game ended 9-2.
SU put up 14 total hits, with Book and Tony Rossi both leading the way with three hits each, also tying for the team-lead in RBIs with two each. Heyduk would be 2 for 4 at the plate, both hits going for extra bases. He also scored twice and picked up the RBI on his double. The team continued their dominance on the basepaths as well, stealing four bases to reach a total of 82 on the season. Sean McCulloch led the way with two of his own, reaching a total of 23 on the season and breaking the Susquehanna career stolen bases record in the process.
Greco picked up the win after throwing four hitless innings on the mound, also striking out two batters and inducing ground outs on every ball put into play.
Now 16-12 overall, the River Hawks will return to Landmark Conference play this weekend, hosting Elizabethtown College for a three-game series. They'll begin with a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon, before finishing the series on Sunday with a single game, again starting at noon. The Blue Jays have proven to be one of the lead contenders in the conference thus far, undefeated in Landmark games at 9-0 and sitting at 19-7 overall.
