Softball Reaches Longest Win Streak of Season with Landmark Sweep at E-Town

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (April 16, 2023) – The Susquehanna University softball team officially has their longest win streak of the season and first Landmark doubleheader sweep following Sunday's meeting at Elizabethtown. Entering the weekend after sweeping Wilkes on Wednesday, the River Hawks beat the Blue Jays, 2-1, in the opener, then unloaded with a dozen runs over five innings for a swift 12-0 win in the nightcap.

Ashley Warner and Lexi Palumbo each had RBI's in both contests to aid in the win, with Warner tying for the conference lead with 26 RBIs on the year. Pitchers Amanda Amerman and Brianna Jones secured wins in the respective contests as Susquehanna improves to 17-12 on the year and 4-2 in the Landmark. Head coach Caressa DeRossett's team returns home Thursday for a non-conference twin bill against Lycoming beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The River Hawks handed starting pitcher Amanda Amerman a 1-0 lead after the top of the first with an Ashley Warner RBI double to right. Amerman reciprocated by allowing just three hits through six innings, while fanning three. Her only blemish was in the bottom of the fourth when Megan Thomas tied the game on a two-out RBI double to left.

Susquehanna retaliated two innings later, taking advantage of an error that got leadoff pinch hitter Hannah Roland on first, then stole second. This set the stage for Lexi Palumbo to deliver an RBI double to left center to bring her in for a 2-1 lead. In the bottom half, the Blue Jays threatened with Jenna Davis on first and Posser offering up a sacrifice bunt to advance her to second. It worked, only Davis attempted to go to third, but got caught up in a rundown for out number three. Ashley Grudzien stepped in the circle in the seventh, retiring the side to secure the save and a River Hawks win.

The River Hawks took advantage of all five of their hits on the day, with Warner accounting for three of them on two doubles and one RBI. Roland had the one single to set up Palumbo's ribbie double.

After posting just five hits in the opening win, the River Hawks had four just in the first inning of game two. This resulted in six runs, as Ashley Warner again opened the scoring with a two-run double to left. Kassidy smith then delivered an RBI single to short to bring home Warner, followed by Stevie Shaak providing a ribbie single to second to make it to 4-0. Nicole Wuertz offered another run when her groundout to short brought home Smith, then Nicole Plesh's infield single to short brought home Shaak.

This provided a healthy foundation for pitcher Brianna Jones to breeze through the Blue Jays' lineup, needing just 50 pitches to mow them down with four strikeouts and giving up just two hits and two walks in five innings of shutout ball on 16 batters faced. The River Hawks worked their way to four more runs in the third, starting with Hailey Kaba reaching first on an error to third base to bring home Plesh. Palumbo sent a sac fly to left to bring home Kaba, then Morgan Henry doubling in two runs for a 10-0 lead after three. Erin Bean provided the last fireworks with a two-RBI single to center in the top of the fifth.

The River Hawks combine for 13 hits, with Bean and Plesh having three-hit days on a 3-for-4 day for Bean with two RBIs and Plesh 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Henry batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one double, while Shaak went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Warner's two-RBI double highlighted a 1-for-2 day, drawing one walk with one stolen base.
