SELINSGROVE, PA (April 26, 2023) – After claiming an impressive three-game sweep over Landmark rivals Juniata, Susquehanna baseball got back out onto Harold Bollinger Field on Wednesday afternoon, this time for a non-conference matchup against 15th-ranked Misericordia University. The River Hawks would rise to the occasion once more, getting their 20th win of the season on a walk-off double, the score finishing at 3-2.
Sophomore Ryan Redmond took the mound as the starter and tossed a gem, throwing 6.0 innings while not allowing an earned run, striking out five batters and giving up just five hits. Meanwhile, while the SU offense was not prolific, they managed to take the lead in the bottom of the 3rd and hold onto it until the 6th. Kris Morrow led off with a double before three straight walks brought home the first run of the game. With the bases loaded and no outs on the board, Lance Book would ground into a double play, but the second run scored on the play.
The visiting Cougars were also far below their typical offensive output, totaling eight hits in the game, the same tally as SU. They managed to tie the game back up in the 6th on a two-RBI double, with those runs being unearned against Redmond's line after an SU error kept the inning alive for Misericordia.
The teams traded zeros in the 7th and 8th, each picking up just a single hit in that time. Landon Ness and Aidan Martin would provide the relief work on the mound. The top of the 9th would yield two baserunners for the Cougars after back-to-back two-out singles, but with runners on second and third, Martin held firm and induced a groundout to give SU the chance to win it. They made the most of that chance, as Sean McCulloch knocked a one-out double to deep left field, followed by an intentional walk being issued to Kris Morrow. With two on, Tony Rossi came to the plate and got the job done with one swing, launching a double to right center field and bringing McCulloch home to clinch the win.
Morrow was the sole River Hawk with a multi-hit game, also reaching base a third time on a walk. Brock Veit also reached base three times, with a hit and two walks. Martin got the win after allowing just two hits in 2.0 innings of work, claiming his team-leading sixth win of the year.
Now 20-15 overall, the River Hawks will get back to Landmark play this weekend, traveling to face Drew for a three-game series. 7-7 in the conference, SU needs just one win to clinch their place in the postseason.
