Women's Lax Earns Place in Landmark Postseason Despite Loss on Final Day

SCRANTON, PA (April 29, 2023) – The Susquehanna women's lacrosse team concluded their regular season slate on the road, traveling to face the University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon. With playoff implications on the line, the hosting Royals stood firm, winning 13-3. However, despite the result, the River Hawks were ultimately helped by other results around the conference and earned their own playoff bid.

Scranton led from start to finish, commanding proceedings throughout. They scored the first five goals of the game, all within the first 11 minutes of the first quarter. Susquehanna would get on the board just before the end of the quarter, with Emma Kelleher scoring on a Liv Owen assist, with Owen tallying her team-leading 32nd assist of the year, that mark good for fifth in the Landmark Conference.

Once more, the Royals would unleash a streak of unanswered goals, scoring five more in the second period, then stretching that out to six straight goals with the first tally in the third quarter. That 11-1 scoreline lasted until the 4:00 mark in the third quarter, when Kelsey Homberg scored her 38th goal of the season, finishing with the team lead and a career-high mark, also good for the ninth-best total in the conference.

Scoring was much more contained for both teams in the second half as compared to the 11 combined goals in the first half, with only five between the two teams in the second. Scranton netted twice in the fourth quarter, but the game would end with one more goal for SU, as first-year Abby Andrus capped off her strong debut season with her 29th goal.

Helped by Juniata College topping Drew University, Susquehanna's 3-4 conference record ultimately earned them fourth place in the Landmark and a matchup with number one seed Catholic in the semifinal round. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3 at 4 pm, in Washington, DC.
