Baseball Dominates in Game 1 at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, PA (April 7, 2023) – Fresh off of a midweek Landmark win over Scranton at home, the River Hawk baseball team took to the road on Friday and continued that positive momentum, winning the first of a three-game weekend series with Moravian in commanding fashion. The River Hawks jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it, ultimately claiming a 10-3 victory.

Susquehanna had it going from the opening pitch, with Sean McCulloch working a lead-off walk, swiping second base, and then coming home to score on an RBI single by Brock Veit, scoring a run before even recording an out. The bottom part of the lineup would get in on the act as well, as SU doubled their lead in the top of the 2nd. Jack Cahill would single before coming home on an RBI single by Tyler Hmielewski.

The Greyhounds would get on the board in the bottom of the third with one run, the only run they'd score on starter Dillan Weikel. Weikel had a great outing to earn the win, completing 5.1 innings of work while allowing just one run on three hits and striking out five batters.

Meanwhile, SU answered right back with two more runs in the top of the 4th, making the score 4-1 on the back of an RBI double by Dylan Heyduk and an RBI single by Hmielewski directly after. Three-and-a-half straight scoreless innings would follow, but the River Hawks came through in the top of the 8th and got all the insurance they could need, plating five runs on the back of two hits, three walks, a hit by pitch, and a fielding error by Moravian. The highlight came in those two hits, both going for extra bases with Tony Rossi launching a ground-rule double to center field and picking up two RBIs. J.P. Yore then came to the plate next and got himself two RBIs of his own as launched his fourth home run of the season, matching his tally from last season.

SU picked up a tenth run in the top of the 9th inning on a McCulloch RBI single, his third hit of the game. Moravian mounted some resistance in the bottom of the 9th, but it was too little, too late as their scoring stopped at two runs and the game ended in SU's favor.

The River Hawk offense was firing on all cylinders, picking up 14 total hits, including five for extra bases. McCulloch and Hmielewski led the way with three each, with both also picking up a walk each to reach base four times. McCulloch also raised his season stolen base total to 20 with to on the day, leading the five River Hawks who picked up a steal in the game.

These teams will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at noon, with Susquehanna having a chance to get their first series sweep of the season and potentially get above the .500 mark in Landmark play, currently sitting at 3-4 in the Landmark and 14-11 overall.
