SELINSGROVE, PA (April 8, 2023) – Susquehanna women's lacrosse first Landmark Conference win of the season came in overwhelming fashion on Saturday with a 15-3 win over Elizabethtown. The Blue Jays scored early for the 1-0 lead, but the River Hawks took over from then on, led by a pair of three-goal games from
Kelsey Homberg and
Hannah McNamara, with Homberg adding two assists for a five-point day.
Nikki Genovese added to the scoring with four points on two goals and two assists, while
Emma Kelleher and
Heather Riefenhauser each netted a pair of scores.
Caitlin Harvey,
Madi Mitchell, and
Allie Kutler each had the remaining goals on the day, with Mitchell garnering her first goal of the season.
E-Town's Sam Deiaco got the scoring started for the day with a score with 11:18 remaining in the first. This marked the Blue Jays' only time in front, which lasted almost six minutes before Riefenhauser notched her 10
th and 11
th goals of the season within a span of 41 seconds to put Susquehanna ahead 2-1. McNamara joined in with her first score of the day to close out the quarter as the River Hawks led 3-1. Mitchell opened the second quarter with her first score of 2023 for the three-goal lead before the Blue Jays tightened things up with another score to make it 4-2. But three consecutive SU scores from McNamara, Harvey, and Homberg helped the River Hawks pull away. Both sides exchanged goals to close out the first half with an 8-3 SU lead, featuring McNamara's third goal of the day.
Emmy Regan handled the net for Susquehanna in the first half, generating seven saves before giving way to
Aerin O'Brien in the second half, who shut out Elizabethtown the rest of the way off six saves. The River Hawks took full advantage with two goals in the third and five in the fourth to soar to the win. Homberg's third goal to make it 13-3 with 8:20 remaining in the fourth triggered a running clock, with scores from Kelleher and Genovese accounting for the last two of the afternoon.
It appeared the bounces were going SU's way Saturday, even when a crazy bounce accounted for Genovese's first goal of the day near the end of the third quarter to make it 10-3. She swept across the goal from the right side attempting a lefty bounce. It appeared to deflect off an E-Town defender that sailed high, essentially making it a rainbow shot that cascaded over the goalie and into the net.
The maroon and orange led in shots 48-19, including 36-16 in shots on goal, and winning 14 off 22 draw controls. Susquehanna prevailed on 2-of-6 free positions coming from McNamara and Homberg, with Mitchell leading the team with four caused turnovers out of the team's 19.
The win puts coach
Randall Swope's team at 7-6 overall and 1-2 in league play. They look to continue against Juniata on Wednesday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Sassafras Field.
