BETHLEHEM, PA – With their backs against the wall, the Susquehanna University softball team hit the comeback trail on day two Saturday at the Landmark Tournament needing two wins to advance to Sunday's championship game. Their day began at 12 noon, playing Scranton in the elimination game where they trailed 1-0 early, only to come back on one swing from
Ashley Warner's two-RBI single to set up a matchup against Catholic, who bumped the River Hawks 10-3 in Friday's opening-round game. Susquehanna exacted revenge, once again overcoming a 1-0 deficit as Warner tied the game with a ribbie single in the sixth, then SU delivering a three-run ninth to take a 4-1 win, with the game wrapping up just after four.
Pitchers
Hannah Foust and
Brianna Jones hurled impressive one-run complete games in the respective contests to help the River Hawks advance to Sunday's championship contest with top seed and host Moravian. Like Saturday, Susquehanna will need two wins over the Greyhounds to defend their Landmark title, with the two teams splitting the regular-season series at Susquehanna. It all begins Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
SUSQUEHANNA 2, SCRANTON 1
Starting pitcher
Hannah Foust threw three innings of no-hit ball to start the game, with her only blemish coming on a wild pitch that brought home Lauren Cawley in the top of the second. Her teammates picked her up in the bottom of the third when the top of the lineup produced three consecutive singles to set the stage for cleanup hitter
Ashley Warner's two-RBI single to center to go up 2-1.
The Royals tried to rally in the fourth with a pair of two-out singles, but the River Hawks got out of the inning unscathed when Alyssa Segnello grounded one to third baseman
Nicole Wuertz who stepped on third to end the threat. Foust cruised along with two more hitless innings, then after a one-out single in the seventh from Gabriella Priolo, stranded her at second to close out the game.
The River Hawks collected eight hits, with two each coming from
Erin Bean, Warner, and
Zoe Bork, with doubles from Bean and Bork for the team's only multi-base hits.
Hannah Roland and
Lexi Palumbo each had 1-for-3 days. Foust finished her masterful seven innings of work with four strikeouts, giving up just one earned run with four walks.
SUSQUEHANNA 4, CATHOLIC 1 (9 INNINGS)
Catholic took hold with a run in the bottom of the first on a two-out Sarah Spaeth triple to right center. First-year starting pitcher an 13-game winner
Brianna Jones remained as cool, calm, and collected as she has all season, settling down the Cardinals through the next five innings. The veteran
Ashley Warner, whose hitting heroics won the River Hawks the earlier game against Scranton, came through again, following up a two-out
Lexi Palumbo double with an RBI single up the middle to score pinch runner Kaylee Smith.
Jones continued her mastery in the circle to move the game to the ninth inning, where her bat would be called on to stir a rally. After a
Hailey Kaba leadoff single, Jones entered the batter's box with one out, coming through with a double to right field to put runners on second and third. Senior catch Rosie Mirabella gave the River Hawks their first lead of the game with a go-ahead single to left to score Kaba, which was followed by graduate student second baseman
Erin Bean reaching on a fielder's choice to second, with Catholic's Hailee Weiss attempting a throw to the plate that wasn't in time.
Hannah Roland added to the merriment with a fielder's choice up the middle, scoring Mirabella.
The Cardinals put two runners on at first and second with two outs in the bottom frame, but Jones put the lid on Susquehanna's long, productive day to retire Alex Garza with a groundout to second. Jones improved to 14-2 on the season, allowing one earned run on eight hits with four strikeouts off 111 total pitches. The River Hawks garnered 11 hits, with Mirabella batting 2-for-4 with one RBI. Jones went 2-for-4 with one double and Palumbo 2-for-5 with a two-bagger. Warner, Bean, and Roland's each had one hit and one ribbie, while Pavlik and Kaba were 1-for-4.
