SELINSGROVE, PA (May 6, 2023) – The Susquehanna baseball team faced Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon for the third time this season, finally able to conclude the season series after this game had been postponed due to rain. In a series that has been close throughout, the third contest provided that to the extreme, going 13 innings before a winner could be declared, with Elizabethtown completing a series sweep on a 6-5 victory over SU.
Having already clinched first place in the Landmark, the vaunted Blue Jay offense got it going early to start the contest, jumping in front on a two-run homer. That lead didn't last long, as Susquehanna showed off their own power hitting through the bat of Tony Rossi, who came to the plate after a lead-off walk by Sean McCulloch and a single from Kris Morrow and scored all three of them with one swing, launching an opposite-field shot over the right field fence for his eighth home run of the season.
After starter Ryan Redmond was able to strand two E-Town runners in the top of the 2nd, SU got on the board again thanks to a three-hit inning, culminating in an RBI single to left field from Morrow. With the score 4-2 in Susquehanna's favor, both pitchers would settle into a groove and begin to work through the respective batting orders, dueling through four-straight scoreless frames. That came to an end in the top of the 7th, when the first two runners reached base and ended the day for Redmond. Brice Gregory came in to pitch, but the next Blue Jay batter would strike for their own three-run home run, giving Elizabethtown their first lead since the top of the 1st.
The River Hawks went down in order in the bottom of the 7th, but Gregory would keep the Blue Jays quiet to start the 8th, giving SU another chance to respond. And respond they did, tying the game back up in the bottom of the 8th on an RBI single from Brock Veit, making the score 5-5, where it would stay for another four scoreless frames.
Elizabethtown looked to have a chance to take the lead early in extras, loading the bases with only one out, but some savvy fielding got SU force outs at home and then third base to end the inning on back-to-back fielder's choices with no runs scored. The top of the 11th nearly yielded a run as well, with three straight singles from E-Town giving a runner a chance to come home on the third, but that single to right field would be fielded by Veit, who then launched an absolute missile in to the catcher to tag the runner out at home and end the inning.
Unfortunately, SU couldn't produce any offense in extras, going down in order in the 11th and 12th, allowing Elizabethtown to finally take the lead in the 13th on a lead-off solo home run. They looked to have a chance to add on with two more hits and a walk to follow, but SU worked out of the bases loaded situation once more. However, the batters would once again go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 13th, missing out on a chance to respond.
The result ultimately does not change the picture for SU, who have already clinched their place in the Landmark postseason and are locked in as the number four seed. They will see this Blue Jay squad once more in their first game of the double-elimination tournament on Friday, May 12. But first, they will play one final regular season game, another makeup against a conference opponent. This will see them visit Drew on Sunday afternoon, having split their first two games with the Rangers and looking to take the rubber match and carry some positive momentum into the playoffs.
