DALLAS, PA (September 1, 2023) – The Susquehanna women's soccer team managed to take an early lead against 5th-ranked Misericordia on Friday evening, but couldn't quite hold on to that advantage, ultimately falling by a 3-1 scoreline.
Delaney Morton would draw a save from the opposing keeper just over a minute into the match, but the breakthrough did not come for nearly ten more minutes, as Morton would serve as the facilitator for a goal from Emily Wertz, who opened her goal-scoring account brilliantly after tallying six goals last season.
However, the Cougars would not stay behind for long, being galvanized by conceding and beginning to bombard Kayleigh Saboja in the SU net. She would make two saves and see a third shot go wide before Misericordia equalized just over twelve minutes after Wertz's score. The pressure did not let up, as the Cougars took the lead just over six minutes later.
Capitalizing on the momentum, the Cougars netted a third goal just one minute later, seeing Julia Beck score a goal after assisting on the first two.
SU forced a save through shot by Maya Ruhalter, but the score remained 3-1 at the half, and ultimately still there at the final whistle. Saboja made three more saves in the second half to keep Misericordia's total at three, but Maggie Morrison would produce the only shot of the half for Susquehanna, forcing a save but nothing more.
The River Hawks will now have more than a week to prepare for their next match, with a trip south to Virginia scheduled for Saturday, September 9. They'll face Shenandoah University at 2 pm, before playing Bridgewater College the next day at 5 pm. Their first home game will come on Wednesday, September 13 at 4 pm as SU hosts DeSales University.
