Wertz Provides Stellar Plays on All Three Scores in 3-0 Blanking of DeSales

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Susquehanna University women's soccer team made their home opener an exciting way to get their first win of the season Wednesday, as Emily Wertz played a part in all three scores for a five-point day in a 3-0 victory over DeSales. Coming off a competitive slate to start the season, including opening at fifth-ranked Misericordia and a Saturday-Sunday stretch at this weekend's Shenandoah Tournament, the River Hawks improve to 1-3 on the season.

Susquehanna appeared to be in control to start the game, and broke through in the 18th minute as Wertz offered her first score of the season. A great downfield pass set Wertz up for a one-on-one opportunity against Bulldogs goalie Jozlyn Minnema, who blocked her first shot that Wertz regathered to work around her and blasted it in. They would take the one-goal lead into halftime, backed by great defense and the goalie work of Kayleigh Saboja, who finished with two saves on the day.

Wertz showcased her veteran passing abilities for the second score in the 67th minute, feeding a pass from the right of the box to upperclassman Marley Sprenkel, kicking it off the hop for a quick strike to take the 2-0 lead. The graduate student provided one more exciting score to cap off her day, running after a downfield pass to get behind the defense, then sailing a 30-yarder from the left wing over the outstretched arms of Minnema in the 82nd minute.

Wertz's five-point day ascends her to sixth all-time in school history with 56 points, while also moving into a tie for first all-time with 18 assists alongside Jess Paulshock (2001-04). The victory puts head coach Nick Hoover one win away from reaching 100 career wins.

The River Hawks look to carry the momentum over to Saturday's non-conference road matchup at Grove City, set for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
