SELINSGROVE, PA (September 3, 2023) – The Susquehanna field hockey team made it two wins from two in their opening weekend after taking a 4-0 victory over Allegheny College on Sunday afternoon. Coming off a dramatic 1-0 win over #19 Franklin & Marshall on Friday night, the River Hawks returned home for their home opener against the Gators of Allegheny, continuing to display stifling defense as they earned their second-straight shutout victory.
SU attacked early and often, peppering the Allegheny goal with a hefty 15 shots in the first quarter alone, but taking just over nine minutes to find the back of the cage. The lid finally came off when first-year Taylor Rothermel scored the first goal of her young collegiate career, putting a shot home after a scrum following a penalty corner, one of the six SU would have in the quarter.
The River Hawks would score again just over a minute later, with Rebecca Ripans picking up her first tally of the season and doubling the lead. Allegheny would clamp down in the second quarter, holding SU off the board into the halftime break.
Susquehanna continued to be steady on the attack in the second half, scoring one goal each in the third and fourth quarters, with Lexi Fumanti picking up a score early in the third and then Katie Bucher ripping an absolute beauty off a penalty corner insert from Gracie Roush.
The lockdown defense of the River Hawks was on display throughout, allowing the offense to keep possession nearly constantly while shutting down any potential opportunities for the Gators, who ultimately went the entire game without registering a shot. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Derrick picked up her first win of the campaign without needing to touch the ball.
SU will remain at home for their next contest, hosting Dickinson College on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 pm.
