Volleyball Opens W&L Tournament with Marymount, Host Generals

LEXINGTON, VA – Susquehanna Volleyball opened the Washington and Lee Invitational Friday with a 3-0 defeat against a daunting Marymount squad, followed by a similar result to the host Generals. Susquehanna currently stands at 2-3 early on in the season.

MARYMOUNT 3, SUSQUEHANNA 0

Susquehanna got off to a rough start, dropping the first set 25-14 and the second set 25-11. They would not go down without a fight though and tied the score on five separate occasions in the third set. Marymount, however, held off the River Hawks with a final set score of 25-20.

Emily Kowalski led the River Hawks in kills with seven, with Samantha Kline contributing four kills on six attempts for a .667 attack percentage to lead the team in that category. Keira Roach secured 14 assists along with two kills, as libero Valerie Stoltz held down the back line with a team-leading 19 digs. Samantha Kline created the only service ace of the match for Susquehanna.

The Saints ended the night with a .307 attack percentage, including an efficient .550 percentage in the second set with 11 kills and zero errors, while the River Hawks finished with a .011 kill percentage, led by a .115 percentage in the third set.

WASHINGTON AND LEE 3, SUSQUEHANNA 0

The tournament hosts quickly set the tone for the second match and jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 25-15. Susquehanna was unbothered, however, and responded back with a nail-biting second set that saw five lead changes and 10 tie scores, but the Generals prevailed, winning the set 25-22. The final set saw Washington and Lee win 25-13.

Brie Livezey totaled 12 kills to lead the River Hawks, while Emily Kowalski secured 7 of her own along with 12 digs. Kiera Roach set the tone for assists, notching 28 to lead the pack while securing the only service ace for Susquehanna. The main cause of headache for SU was the blocking ability from Washington and Lee, as they out blocked Susquehanna 6-2, with 4 of them coming from solo blocks.

The River Hawks will look to rebound during the Saturday slate, starting with Maryville College at 1:30 PM, immediately followed by Randolph-Macon College at 4:30. SU currently holds a 3-0 record against RMC all-time, one they will look to improve before they head home.
