HUNTINGDON, PA - Susquehanna men's basketball shot 52.9% from the field, 40.9% from beyond the arc, and 22-28 from the charity stripe in an 85-74 win over Juniata on Wednesday night. 21 points from guard
Cooper Haberern led the River Hawks, who boasted four players in double figures on the night.
For the second game in a row, the River Hawks both scored more than 80 points and had at least 20 makes from the line, making their second-highest total of the season at Memorial Gymnasium in Huntingdon.
Brandon Lavitt converted six of his nine attempts from the line, while
Audric Washington was perfect at a 4-4 clip.
The River Hawks only needed to take a lead once, grabbing it on a
Michael Pirone triple with 15:44 to go in the first half and never looking back, jumping out to a 43-27 lead at the interval. Pirone was one of the four River Hawks who racked up double-digit points, going 7-of-12 from the field including that three to total 15 points.
The largest lead of the night for the visiting River Hawks came at the 12:13 mark in the second half, when
Billy Anderson's layup made the gap 17 at 56-39. Juniata rallied down the stretch and cut the gap to just six on a Chase Husted dunk at 69-63. The River Hawks were unfazed by the life shown by the Eagles, as
Steven Ressler answered with a three on the next possession and the River Hawks proceeded to go on an 8-1 run that included buckets from Pirone and Haberern, as well as the three from Ressler.
The team's highest scorer, Haberern, also led the team in rebounds, picking up seven boards on the night. Lavitt followed with six, while Ressler and Anderson each added five as the rebound battle was split evenly 36-36. Both sides fought hard on the glass, with Juniata picking up 17 offensive rebounds to the River Hawks' nine. Pirone and Haberern led the visitors with three assists each.
The River Hawks sent back nine Juniata shots, including a game-high five blocks from sophomore center
Audric Washington, while
Marcus Mitchell also rejected three Eagle efforts.
Susquehanna is next in action on Saturday, playing the front end of a basketball doubleheader at Moravian, with the men tipping off at 2 PM. The win moves them to 11-5 overall and 8-1 in the Landmark Conference, good enough for joint-top spot alongside Catholic, who the River Hawks hold the tiebreaker over thanks to their 60-58 win in December.
