SELINSGROVE, PA (January 17, 2024) - The Susquehanna University women's basketball team defeated the Juniata College Eagles 61-33 Wednesday night to increase their winning streak to three, pushing their stretch to seven wins in their last eight games, and picking up their fifth straight home win.
Susquehanna dominated from the opening tip, scoring the first seven points of the game before Juniata got on the board. Despite the lead being cut down to 9-6 with just over three minutes to go, the River Hawks scored the last six points of the quarter to lead 15-6 behind five points each from Kenzie Selvaggi and Kaitlyn Lynch.Â
To start the second the Eagles cut the deficit to just four points thanks to five quick points from Hailey Sherman, but the River Hawks responded with a 17-3 run for the rest of the quarter as Julia Roth led the way with six points and two steals as Susquehanna led 32-18 at halftime.Â
Out of the break the River Hawks played their best defensive quarter of the season. Juniata scored just one point the whole 10 minutes as they shot 0-11 from the field. Bri Bodtorf's free thow with just over two minutes to play in the quarter ended a 12-minute scoreless stretch for the Eagles. SU also racked up eight steals in the period, including four from Roth who also tacked on eight points on the other end along with the first made three-point shot of her collegiate career. This powered Susquehanna to a 49-15 lead going into the fourth. Â
In the fourth the River Hawks got the lead to its highest point of 35 just over a minute in, and from there were on cruise control until the final buzzer. Roth led the team with 17 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, and eight steals, which tied the school record, and Lynch also got into double figures with 15 points and eight rebounds. As a team they outshot Juniata by 13% and won the rebound and steals battle 57-48 and 15-8, respectively.Â
With the win Susquehanna improves to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in Landmark Conference play, surpassing both win totals from last season with nine games remaining. Their next game is on the road against the Moravian University Greyhounds this Saturday on Jan. 20 with a start time of 4 p.m.Â
