SELINSGROVE, PA - Julia Roth contributed a career-high 29 points as Susquehanna women's basketball won a 65-64 overtime decision over Elizabethtown. She hit the clutch free throws to seal the win and also contributed another double-double with 12 rebounds.
Despite Elizabethtown's size advantage and prolific rebounding, it was the River Hawks who emerged with a 10-rebound margin on the boards, including 18 offensive. They used their extra opportunities well, with 14 second chance points to the Blue Jays' four.
Roth was 11-for-22 from the field and 7-for-8 from the foul line in the victory to make it an even 500 points for her career. She was joined in double figures for the game by
Zoie Maffei, who scored a career-high 14 points on efficient 6-of-8 shooting, as well as making the River Hawks' solitary three, and also by
Kaitlyn Lynch, who contributed ten points.
Julia Pinckert also contributed eight points and a game-high five assists without turning the ball over in 37 minutes, the only player who played over 15 minutes to not lose possession.
Although the River Hawks fell cold from three-point range, they experienced success inside against their taller visitors with 42 points in the paint to Elizabethtown's 30.
In a game with eight lead changes and six ties, the River Hawks tied the game at 61 following a layup by Maffei that was assisted by Roth with 1:07 to play in overtime. They took the lead after two made free throws by Roth after a foul by Allyia Kennedy with 39 seconds left and would not relinquish their advantage. She then stole the ball from Ella Gordon, got fouled again by Kennedy, and hit two more free throws to make the score 65-61.
A late three by Cyleigh Wilson cut the deficit to one, and after two missed free throws by Maffei, Elizabethtown had the chance to win it with a basket, but missed twice as time expired to give the River Hawks their first win over the Blue Jays in nearly four years, and just the second in
Gabby Holko's tenure.
Holko's team improves to 12-7 on the season, tying the second-most wins in a season under the fifth-year head coach. Their next game is away at Goucher, tipping off in Maryland on Wednesday, January 31st at 7 PM. They celebrated a successful Alumni Day with a valuable win against the team in line for the second seed in the Landmark Conference, as the River Hawks remain fourth with a 7-5 conference record.
