SELINSGROVE, PA (January 31, 2024) – Susquehanna men's basketball and their fans proved once again what a difficult place to play O.W. Houts Gymnasium has been for visitors, hosting a dangerous Goucher team coming off of two-straight wins but stopping them in their tracks. The River Hawks stifled the Gophers' offense while putting on a show on offense, culminating in an 89-65 win.
After taking a couple minutes to get going at the start, SU would go on a ten-point run to take control of the game at 13-4 and never looked back, holding that lead for the rest of the contest and quickly stretching their advantage out to double-digits. One of five River Hawks to reach double-digit points in the game, Brandon Lavitt would pace the group throughout the night, tallying a season-high 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting, adding nine rebounds, an assist, and tying for the team lead with four steals.
Marcus Mitchell would be the other player with four steals, helping the team rack up a season-high 14 steals. He would also be one of the five with double-digit points, scoring 11 and adding five rebounds and an assist.
First-year Michael Pirone continued his fantastic debut season, earning the first start of his collegiate career and making the most of it, racking up 15 points for his fifth double-digit scoring performance of the season. He added to his statline with four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Steven Ressler turned in a strong performance, scoring 15 points, including three makes from beyond the arc. He also led the team with five assists and added three steals.
Billy Anderson would be the fifth double-digit scorer, coming off the bench and providing perfection from the floor, scoring 14 points while going six for six. Cooper Haberern would come up just two points short of being the sixth player in double digits but did provide a team-leading effort on the boards, looking like a magnet for the ball as he tallied a career-high 14 rebounds.
Firmly entrenched in second place in the Landmark, SU sits two wins above Drew in third while trailing leaders Catholic by one. With five games to go in the regular season, the River Hawks will hit the road for their next contest, traveling to face Wilkes on Saturday, February 3. The Colonels are one of just two teams to beat Susquehanna in Landmark play this season and the River Hawks will undoubtedly be looking to avenge that home loss from earlier in the season. That game will tip off at 2 pm.
