BETHLEHEM, PA - Susquehanna University Field Hockey remains undefeated in Landmark Conference action convincingly following Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 road win at Moravian. Senior
Sophia Prata got on the board twice, along with a score from
Kiara Koeller and
Kari Schmidt on a penalty stroke to spell out the victory and quickly move past a 1-1 tie from the second quarter.
Koeller already had a lot to celebrate on Saturday as the first-year was named to the Homecoming Court as part of SU's Homecoming Weekend. While she was unable to attend the coronation on campus, she made the first mark on the game at Moravian as she gathered a ball at midfield and used speed to carry her to a breakaway and a clean shot towards the cage to take a 1-0 lead five minutes into the second quarter. Before the River Hawks can dig in to their lead, the Greyhounds answered back two minutes later when Lexi Dinsmore fired a slapper that whizzed past goalie
Ashley Derrick to tie things up.
Susquehanna kept a firm grip on the game thanks to holding Moravian to five shots and two on goal while they piled on 33 shots with 22 on goal. The volume of shots paid off just minutes later as Prata found her first score of the day to put SU back on top. It was the work of her heads-up play on defense that got her the score as following the ball rolling past Moravian's endline the Greyhounds passed it back in their zone, but a bad hop slowed the ball down which gave Prata the green light to go after it. She gathered the ball and sent it to the left post for her sixth goal of the season and a 2-1 halftime ead. They didn't wait long for their next scoring chance in the second half as they were awarded a penalty stroke, which went to Schmidt and she delivered for the team's first penalty stroke score of the season and a 3-1 lead. It was Schmidt's seventh goal of the season, standing alone for the team lead until her assist one quarter later paved the way for Prata's second goal of the day. Schmidt received the insert on a penalty corner and threw it towards the net, which came at Prata's stick who knocked it into the back of the cage to close out the scoring. The River Hawks finished with 10 penalty corners to the Greyhounds' five.
Susquehanna remains atop the Landmark Conference standings with a 6-0 league record and 10-4. They are tied with Catholic for first place, with the two teams set to face off in their regular season finale in Selinsgrove on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Before then the River Hawks have heavy competition on the road for two more Landmark games, starting with Juniata on Tuesday, Oct. 22, then Scranton in a rematch of last year's Landmark Championship in the Electric City on Saturday, Oct. 26.
