WASHINGTON, DC - Susquehanna's volleyball squad already has their Landmark regular season wrapped up, going six out of nine after defeating Catholic on Saturday by a 3-0 score. The match was the first of two the River Hawks played in their stay in the nation's capital as they faced Christopher Newport following sweeping the Cardinals. The Captains handed Susquehanna a 3-0 defeat.
With the victory Susquehanna moves to 16-13 overall and a 6-3 league mark, setting themselves up for a spot in November's conference tournament. They have a bye week next week as the remaining Landmark teams complete their season to set up the tournament picture. Right now SU stands in fourth place behind Juniata (20-0, 7-0 Landmark), Scranton (15-11, 7-0 Landmark), and Elizabethtown (15-10, 6-3 Landmark), a spot that would at least guarantee them a home playoff match in the Landmark Quarterfinals.Â
One day after a quick trip through Baltimore with a 3-0 win over Goucher, a contest where the Gophers barely posted double digits and a 25-4 second-set win by the River Hawks, Susquehanna kept its streak going at the Cardinals' expense. While these frames were closer, the River Hawks denied Catholic from reaching at least 20 points in all but the second set, winning game one, 25-16, game two 25-21, and game three 25-16. The second set proved to be the toughest, as Susquehanna needed afterburners to hold on to a late 22-17 lead after the Cardinals reeled off four straight to make it 22-21. SU got back on track thanks to an attack error from CUA that led to a
Callie Wince service ace for set point, then
Ryan Rorls delivering the knockout blow with a kill off a
Keira Roach set.Â
Emily Kowalski led the contest with 12 kills, along with nine kills from
Amanda Gore and seven from Brianna Livezey. Gore added one ace and tied with
Emma Willow for the team lead in blocks with three. Roach set up 33 assists, while
Jessica Sack had 17 digs. Susquehanna finished the contest with an impressive .303 kill percentage with 45 kills and just 12 errors, compared to CUA's .140 attack percentage on 34 kills and 19 errors.
Up against a formidable Christopher Newport squad in the afternoon matchup, the River Hawks gave the Captains a good fight in game one, nearly overcoming a 24-21 deficit with two straight points, but ultimtately a CNU kill spelled a 25-23 win for the blue team. The Captains continued on with more decisive wins in game two, 25-17, and game three, 25-12. SU had a .087 kill percentage for the contest to CNU's .283, with
Emily Kowalski netting six kills, along with five from Gore and four from Rorls. Gore added on three blocks, while Wince tallied three aces and Roach 20 assists. Sack is now within striking distance of 1,000 career digs after her 15 against Christopher Newport putting her at 984. Wince added ten digs and Roach nine.Â
With just over two weeks between now and the Landmark Quarterfinals, the River Hawks finish the regular season with a bang hosting their annual River Hawk Classic on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9. They'll play host to William Smith, Rochester, and Stevenson, with each team getting three matches.Â
