SELINSGROVE, PA - The volleyball season came to a close for Susquehanna Tuesday evening as the River Hawks were dealt a 3-1 defeat to Catholic in the Landmark Quarterfinals. Despite a three-set win over the Cardinals during the season and holding hosting rights as the four seed, the River Hawks could not overcome Catholic winning the first two games following 26-24 and 25-21 decisions. They avoided being swept with a 25-21 third set win, but a 25-20 Cardinals victory sealed the deal in game four to send CUA on its way to #1 Juniata this Thursday for the Landmark Semifinals.
The curtain came down on the careers of five endowed River Hawks, who left a lasting impression on the game before bowing out.
Ryan Rorls delivered 14 kills to lead the way, while
Emily Kowalski put in 12 kills and
Amanda Gore nine. Gore carried on with a match-high five service aces and five blocks, while
Keira Roach set up 40 assists. Fellow upperclassmen
Brie Livezey hauled in three kills.
Libero and defensive specialist
Jessica Sack, who earned the Landmark's Defensive Athlete of the Week, led with 16 digs, with
Regan Kane right behind her with 11 digs and
Kyndall Mason eight.
Mya Durham had two block assists. Overall the River Hawks pounded the Cardinals with 52 kills and just 14 errors for a .264 hitting percentage, though CUA totaled 64 kills with 17 errors for a .313 hitting percentage. Catholic also delivered ten service aces to Susquehanna's seven, though the Cardinals had a dozen service errors while SU had just seven.Â
Susquehanna's 2024 season under coach Stephanie Johnson wraps up with a 19-13 record, while acquiring a 6-3 Landmark ledger that saw their lone league defeats come at the hands of Juniata, Scranton, and Elizabethtown, the one, two and three respective seeds. The Blue Jays won their quarterfinals matchup against Drew Tuesday night to face the Royals on Thursday.
