Women's Soccer on Short End at Drew in Final Contest of 2024

MADISON, NJ - Susquehanna women's soccer wrapped up their 2024 campaign by traveling to Drew to take on the Rangers on Saturday, taking the lead but eventually falling 2-1.

After a scoreless first half in which Katie Henchy made five saves, the River Hawks broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Gigi Duncan was played in on the right wing and beat the goalkeeper but saw her shot crash against the crossbar, after which the ball fell to Amelia Kopp, who turned in from close range to give the River Hawks the lead.

However, Drew scored just under two minutes later via a free-kick off the boot of Kayla Kuncken, and Isabella Grof-Tisza converted from the penalty spot in the 67th minute to give the Rangers an advantage.

The River Hawks had two late chances, with deliveries from set-pieces headed wide of either post by Ava Billmeyer and Maesie Baker, as they searched for an equalizer that ultimately never came.

At full-time, the River Hawks totaled ten shots with three on target, compared to Drew's 19 with 12 on target. Henchy made ten saves, and Billmeyer led the way with six shots and two on target, while Kopp's goal represented the other shot on target.

Despite improving on last season's win total of four by picking up five wins in 2024, the River Hawks miss out on a postseason appearance with a ninth-placed finish in the Landmark Conference. Their final record stands at 5-10-4 as Nick Hoover '06's team made steps in the right direction after bringing in 14 first-years. They say goodbye to seven seniors, Kayleigh Saboja, Noelle Sorensen, Samantha Kiwak, Catherine Chodnicki, Chloe Michaels, Ashley Marchessault, and Olivia Haines, who contributed three post-season appearances through their four years as River Hawks.
