Men's Hoops Open Landmark Season Beating Goucher

SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna Men's Basketball coasted to a 74-53 victory on Wednesday night against the visiting Goucher Gophers. The win, featuring three double-digit scorers, extended the River Hawks' dominant streak of defeating Goucher – one that dates back to early 2014.

Marcus Mitchell, Audric Washington, and Michael Pirone made up the double-digit scoring for Susquehanna, each tallying 11 points and leading the River Hawks to a bounce-back victory since their loss in the championship of the Susquehanna Tipoff Tournament. Washington delivered an efficient performance, going a perfect 4-4 for the field and Pirone was 3-5 from the field, tallying five points from the free-throw line. Mitchell, who had been struggling lately, found his groove in the second half where he scored nine of his 11 points to cap off a strong showing.

The River Hawks took control at the end of the first half, where they went on a 10-2 run in the final 4:28. Allen Cieslak led the surge, scoring eight of those ten points, giving Susquehanna a 33-22 lead at halftime in a game that only saw one lead change.

Susquehanna started the second half strong, going on a 15-4 run in the first five minutes, increasing their lead to 48-26. Steady scoring by Steven Ressler and Washington led the charge during the second-half run. Ressler had eight points against the Gophers.

The River Hawks capitalized in the paint, scoring 12 more points than the Gophers down low. Susquehanna also took control from beyond the arc, cashing in on five three-pointers against Goucher's one three-pointer. Ressler had two three-pointers alongside Allen Cieslak, who also had two. Cieslak scored eight total points in the game.

A game at Moravian University on Saturday lies ahead for Susquehanna as they look to extend their win streak to two. The River Hawks haven't lost to Moravian since January 2020. They posted 71-67 and 77-74 victories over the Greyhounds last season.
