BALTIMORE, MD - The Susquehanna women's basketball team showed off its conditioning on Wednesday night, sprinting up and down the court to outpace their hosts Goucher to take their Landmark Conference opener by a 90-69 score. It marked the team's highest scoring total of the young season, while posting a 3-1 overall mark and a 1-0 ledger to start league play.
Senior Guard
Kenzie Selvaggi totaled her highest scoring output of the season and second highest in her career, scoring 24 points. She did so by knocking down 10 of 18 shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Sydney Weyant was close behind, scoring a career-high 21 points on 73% shooting from the field while hitting 5 of 7 shots at the free throw stripe.
SU's 90-point output is its highest since Nov. 29, 2023, also against Goucher. Coincidentally, that game, which ended in a 109-60 win for the River Hawks, was also the season's Landmark Conference opener.
Susquehanna has now won 22 straight matchups against Goucher, bringing the all-time series to 31-2 in favor of the River Hawks. However, 69 points is the most that the Gophers have ever scored on the River Hawks.
Annie Greek and
Lauren Klein also helped pace the River Hawks with 13 and 9 points, respectively. Junior guard
Julia Pinckert stuffed the stat sheet with 8 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.
Goucher uses a high-tempo, lightning-fast system of playing referred to as "The System", which was pioneered by David Arseneault at Grinnell College in the 1990s. Grinnell's system promises constant pressing, lots of 3-point attempts and incredibly frequent substitutions. Grinnell's men's team still uses the system today, now ran by David Arsenault Jr.
Susquehanna is the first team all season long to hold the Gophers, who were averaging 118 points per game entering play Wednesday, to under 90 points.
The press frustrated the River Hawks early, forcing 4 turnovers in the opening two minutes of the game as the Gophers built an early 4-0 lead. Eventually, SU got back under control and took the lead. Weyant's last-second layup gave the River Hawks a 27-22 advantage after the first quarter.
After slowing building their lead to 53-42 at half time, Susquehanna's advantage blossomed in the third quarter. The River Hawks switched to a 1-3-1 zone defense, holding the Gophers to only 7 points in the frame. Weyant scored 5 points in the quarter as SU extended its lead to 25 by the end of the quarter. Goucher pulled a few points back in the final quarter, but it was far too late for a serious comeback attempt.
Despite playing only 13 minutes, Meyona Boykin led the Gophers with 21 points, making 9 field goals.
The women's basketball team will continue Landmark Conference play at 2:00 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Moravian in the front end of a double-header with the men's team. The Greyhound women are 1-2 to open the season after losing their Landmark opener 70-55 to Drew on Wednesday.
